W2 Employee AND Independent Contractor - Tax Question? Ok, here's my work/tax situation. In 2011, I worked from January - August full time as a regular employee for a job that I had been working at for 3 years. I get a W2. Also, in January, I started freelance work as an independent contractor doing some transcription work for a company. The work is varied, I usually get maybe a project a month, so I didn't do any quarterly estimated payments because there's no way to estimate how much I will make. For example, some months, I'd make $100, some months I'd make $800. I stopped working as a regular employee at the end of August cause I moved to California. (I was living in New York.) I continued to freelance as an independent contractor for the main company. Then, I scored a second transcription independent contractor freelance position, which only lasted about a month and then it was over - short project. I have constantly put away 30% of my independent contractor income into a separate account. Now that tax season is approaching, I just wanted to get some tax advice on the best way to file. I heard Turbo Tax isn't friendly to independent contractors. However, I still have my regular employee taxes to file. Is there a way to file my employee taxes on something like Turbo Tax and then do my independent contractor taxes on the other form and then incorporate it? Or should I just stick with doing everything by hand? I wouldn't mind that, but I would like to file online so I can make this process speedy. Any advice would be helpful. I know some of the stuff I will be claiming for my independent contractor forms, like maybe the home office - I have to look more into the regulations for that. (For my regular employee form, I just take the standard deduction). I would like to do all of this myself, I have always done my taxes myself. I do have a tax friend that I will be having him look over everything before I submit to make sure I didn't make any mistakes, but I would like to do it all myself initially to avoid paying a fee. Thanks for the help! I'm just worried I'm going to have to pay a lot, even though I do have money put aside. The independent contractor thing is so new to me so I just want to make sure everything is right!

do I need to issue some tax form to an independent contractor? An independent contractor did a bathroom remodel project for my own home during 2010. Independent Contractor for Party Sales...What tax forms? I am a consultant for Gold Canyon Candles and am an independent contractor. However, I did not make more than $600, so I didn't get a 1099. I am still interested in knowing what forms I need to file with my 1040 and what deductions I can take and what business activity code would be used? I have a home office and would like to take that deduction. Also, I make cakes and do photography on the side, from my home office. Would I have to do separate forms for each business? I do not have a DBA for either of my businesses and don't have a tax ID number. I need to know what the business activity code is if I were to claim the income. Can anyone answer that question?? I don't need to know that I need a tax ID and to consult a business lawyer. Thanks.

independent contractor (1099 tax report form)? I have a concern & question regarding my working status for tax report. I am currently working in a SAT Prep+after school tutorial class company as a office staff. I work 20 hrs a week, even though I am a part time worker, and doing exact same quality of work as the office manager. I coordinate classes, recruit instructors, advertisement and all kinds of administration stuff. However, I just received the tax report form from the company which was call "1099 form" instead of "W2" form. I found out that 1099 form is for independent contractor. (a.k.a. unemployed person's tax report form) I don't understand why I am getting that 1099 form instead of the W2 form. The biggest concern is that because I got that 1099 form, I need to pay over one thousand of dollars for the tax on April. Whereas, if I got the W2 form, I only need to pay about five hundreds dollars. Because I am a independent contractor, I need to pay twice tax. Can anyone answer me why this happened? n how I can fix it? Thanks everyone for your answers. Greatly appreciate it! I did realize that I should have known my working status better before starting the job. however, I'm 21 now and this was my very first job ever, and this is the first time I am filing the tax return form, too. (this is my silly excuse but learned a lesson!) As you think, I was very foolish by not checking it carefully before I was hired. However, my employer never mentioned anything about the "independent contractor" during the interview or when I signed the contract paper. I feel like being betrayed from the company now.. shouldn't they have explained to me that I am a independent contractor when they interviewed me or before I started working? I worked really hard for almost 2 years for them and my boss was really friendly to me the whole time. I feel like they fooled me because I was young and didn't know anything about his 'independent contractor' thing..so..there is no other way that I can get the w2 form now?
how much should i charge for Independent contractor income tax preparation? One person wants me to file their independent contractor 1099 form. Could you please let me know any ballpark amounts I should charge him excluding the filing fees? thanks Actually I have never charged anyone for tax prep. doing it for the first time. The person has the turbotax DVD with 5 free e-filings included. And he has to file home and small business one and not the 1040EZ personal one.

As an Independent Contractor (who works for multiple companies), which tax form should I file? ? Also, is there a maximum amount I must earn per company before I will have to include the amount as income?
Independent Contractor tax trying to get this straight ..? Okay, so i'm very very confused still. 1. Okay so my first question is as an independent contractor how many times a year do I file a 1099-misc form? I heard you have to do it four times a year, and the place at work for say they send out the 1099-misc form every January. So is it once a year or four times a year? 2. Income tax and independent contractor tax are two different things. SO I am paying income tax on top of IC tax. I know the IC tax is 15%. I only have one job not other source of income. So on top of the 15% that i'm making I also have to pay another 15-20% income tax on my total earnings? For instance say i make 6,000 a year. What would be my total tax bill ? Some people are saying they only pay 15%, how is that possible that they aren't paying income tax?
When you become a 1099 employee who provides the IRS tax form? Is it the employee who must send a tax form to the IRS showing his income, or does the employer / company provide the IRS 1099 income form to the employee / independent contractor? Those tax regulations are sooo confusing.
Independent contractor taxes? I've asked this question before but right now I'm not sure. I worked for an online independent film company as an independent contractor from January 2008 up until about October 2008. I was told I should save about 25% of my income for taxes, but I e-mailed her to send me whatever tax form I needed and she said I might not have any tax liability since I made a few thousand. I've calculated out that I've made about $8400 in that time span. I know I need to file, but what should I be expecting to pay for taxes? I have the money saved but I'm going into this semester with no job and every dollar I can keep makes a huge difference. If I have to pay anywhere near the full 25% I'm going to have to sell my camcorder, something I really don't want to do. Any responses?
Tax Filing, Independent Contractor, Separated? If a married, (not legally, 6 months separated) woman is a part time independent contractor from 9/2008-present. How does she file her taxes? Which form does she use? She's only made abt $2000 for 2008 SITUATION: The ex-husband wants to file married joint. The ex-wife isn't sure because she barely knows about taxes and with all the financial mess she keeps on finding that her ex got them into - she's not sure if she could trust him, aside from that he lies a lot. The ex-husband didn't file taxes for 2005 and 2006. They both cannot afford to hire a professional to do their taxes. Do you have any suggestions? Or do you know for sure what they can do to help themselves? The ex-wife didn't know anything about taxes ad she mistakenly laid that part of responsibility on her ex-husband because she believed he's good at it. What else can the lady do to make sure she's helping solve the problem? The ex-husband was divorced before. He claims that he owes IRS because of what happened when his 1st wife left him where she claimed all the kids and he got stuck with the bill. They divorced 7 years ago and 2 years after that him and my friend remarried but they are now separated. While they were together she recalls the guy's paycheck was garnished by IRS. After about 5 years of financial chaos being married with him, she decides to leave. Her credit is full of unpaid medical bills. Should she make her ex-husband help her pay for those debts or should she just move on and stay away from him? She's very confused rightnow and not sure where to start. Thanks for your help and encouragement.
What forms do I use to declare independent contractor income on my 2008 California state taxes? Hi everyone - Hoping you can help. I'm an independent contractor in California. Federal taxes are totally clear to me, but I'm having trouble with state taxes: I can't find info on which forms I need to attach my California 540 form in order to declare that income that I earned shown on my MISC-1099. For federal: I already filed my 1040, and attached Schedule SE and C-EZ. I already sent in my quarterly taxes using 1040-ES. For California taxes, I already sent in my 540-ES to the franchise tax board for each quarter. But I'm looking at my 540 form and I cannot find state form that are comparable to the federal schedules SE and C-EZ. Where do I declare the income from the 1099-MISC on the California state forms? Thanks so much! Thanks for all of the help everyone -this is great info!
What forms do you need to file taxes as an Independent Contractor? I have recently been employed as an independent contractor for ChaCha.com and I am wondering about taxes. I just need to know what forms I will need when filing. Last year I filed using 1040EZ and got pretty much all of my tax money back as I am a full time student and make very little money. Will it be the same with my job as an independent contractor or will they take the 15% + medicare + social security no matter how much I make? Thank you! Oh and one more thing. Is the 15.3% including the medicare and social security that I have to pay? Or is it 15.3% income + SS + Medicare?
As an independent contractor, where do I to go pay my taxes? I became an independent contractor 3 month ago. I understand that I need to make quarterly payments. The first one is due June 15. I do not know where I go & make the payment. Is there a place I go to & write a check to pay it? or Do I send in a check to IRS? What kind of forms do I get? First time as an independent contractor so the tax system is very confusing for me. Thanks in advance for your help.
I was told to fill out the IRS 1099 tax form but am I an independent contractor? How does boss benefit? -I was not told that I'd be given the 1099 when I started. - I haven't quit bc when I started working here, everything appeared to be "normal" and so I quit my retail job. I wasn't told about the 1099 until a little over 4 months into this job. - they did change owners but the new owner was already working here. -I'm the receptionist and have a regular schedule while I apply for school. - I'm really sorry for stereotyping here but I'm not sure how else to phrase it- it's a stereotypical asian nail salon which just happens to include facials and massages as well. - I DON'T get any breaks!!! They let me get my food but that's it. I've asked a few times about it and I've been told that it's bc this isn't a "normal job" and we have to go with the flow. When I do get my food, I have to eat between customers. I work 10+ hour days. I'm under the impression it's bc I'm an "independent contractor"- which I don't even know what it means. - I get paid CA minimum wage. - my hours were cut bc its been slow and was told to look for a second job- however, the owner still calls me expecting me to come in when I'm not scheduled bc it "got busy all of a sudden". -I'm ready to quit, just have to find another job. I know I'm being taken advantage of but would just like to know by how much. Or if I really don't get a lunch break bc I'm "independent". -thank you!! I just don't know where else to go to ask. Thank you EVERYONE for all your answers! They are all so helpful!!!! I'm definitely being screwed. A few additions- they pay me by the hour!!! She has a log for us and we write what time we came in and leave- then age signs it. She's not deducting anything! But when I started the previous owners did do the w2 but passed the salon down to this new owner, who told me she would get to it once she was settled. Well, that was 4 months later when she handed me a 1099 form and i was confused. I'm stuck to the front reception area when I'm here...I definitely am planning on filing the ss8 and quitting soon. Would they fine her or shut her business down? All the ladies that work here are very hard working and kind and I would hate to jeopardize their jobs bc of my boss' greediness.

Would it be cheaper overall to work as an independent contractor or to form an LLC and Biz-Biz contract? I am a professional Video/Film editor, but I'm just starting out doing contract work, and I'm unsure whether it'd be cheaper for me to form a company via LLC or INC and file taxes as a business (which would allow me to do business expenses, etc, or to stay an independent contractor having to deduct my own income and SS taxes and all of that jazz. Business law students, lawyers, tax professionals, people in the know, please respond

Alright so when I pay for independent contractor taxes do I know that I have to pay them quarterly but do I pay them the same year that I get the money right away? Or do I wait till next year? 2. Next, irs.gov says you have to report all income over 400 dollars, so does that mean I start paying taxes once I hit 400 dollars or do I start to pay them at 600$? So am I just filing out some form once I hit 400 then another at 600? 3. I worked as an Independent Contractor, how do I claim this on my taxes? I worked as an independent contractor and was paid $891. I am unsure of how I am to claim this income on my taxes. Am I considered an independent contractor or an employee? Ok I have a new question for ya'll. I am considering the idea of hiring a attorney on a problem that I am having. The problem is that my boss calls us independent contractors, and pays non of our taxes. Instead we are suppossed to pay our taxes at the end of they year with a 1099 form and we dont get or use a w-2. The problem is that I think I am a employee and not an IC. He tells me when to be a work, where to do my work, how to do my work, and when to stop working. He provided a traing class for me and the others instructing us on how to do the job, the way he wanted it done. Now I thought that an IC gets to set their own schedule, doesnt work when they dont want to, and they are doing the job the way that they want to. He pays us with a buisness check, like cash, pays none of our taxes, such as social security, or federal, and he made us sign only one document at the time of hire. That was a document waiving our right to workmans comp. What do you all think? IC or employee in AZ?

Worked as an independent contractor last year but only got paid this year. How do I deal with taxes? I worked near the end of last year on a one-time project and got paid for it in January of this year. I have a few tax-related questions for anyone who can help: (1) Can I deal with all income and expenses together in my 2007 return (to be filed next year) because I only received pay in a check with this year's date? It seems illogical (I know that sounds Spock-like) to have expenses on this year's form and income on next year's when it all relates to the same work. (2) Can I claim the taxes with my 2007 form without making quarterly payments for withholding (or whatever other taxes come from being an independent consultant) and, if so, how would I do it? If necessary, I guess I could make quarterly payments, but this really was a one-time project and I have no anticipation of any such work this year. I have a full-time job, so I could have excess taxes taken out now, if that would help me to avoid quarterly payments. Thank you for your help.
Independent Contractor one 1099 form? I've been working as an independent contractor for the last threes years. I keep a log of the income I bring in and use that at tax time. (most of it cash, checks) However, last year I was issued a 1099 from a company that I did some consulting work for. For this year taxes I have the one 1099 from this company plus other cash income from the business. I heard having one 1099 form maybe a problem for the IRS. Is this correct? ANy advice would be greatly appreciated
Independent Contractor Taxes? I am 19, this will be my first time filing for taxes. I live in Texas and I worked for a photography company for only 2 months. I was an independent contractor. I only earned $916.00, no taxes deducted. I just got my 1099 form. I don't think I will have enough to cover the taxes soo... will I be able to cover it through another job that I had? They deducted taxes and I should get enough through them. My actual question is.. once I get my taxes from this other job, can I transfer the funds to cover the taxes for the photography job?
As an independent contractor, am I supposed to recieve a form (similar to a W-2) in order to file my taxes? Last year I began working as a promotional model for a few different companies under an I-9. I have not recieved any forms regarding taxes. I heard that these forms are called 1099s and that I should only recieve one from the companies that paid me more than $600. Is this true?
W2 form if working as Independent Contractor? I've worked for a company as an independent contractor. I was paid by the hour, and no deduction appeared nor was applied on my paycheck Should they have provided me with a W2 form for taxes purposes? Is it a different form? Thanks
How do i file taxes if i was considered independent contractor for last job? In my last job she had me fill out a form requesting a tax id pin, now that its tax time i have no clue how to file. Haven't received any paperwork for that company. Don't know exactly what i need to do my taxes? Help?
Which federal tax form do I use for work done in 2003? I was an independent contractor, but never filed my tax form. I made very little, if any, profit that year, and only 8K in income. Where do I get the form? What year should it say at the top?
Self Employment tax not paid since i have become an independent contractor? since i have become an independant contractor over 2 years ago, i have only been paying income taxes and i have never paid into any self employment tax. I work specifically for only one company but they use me as an independant contractor to reduce their tax liability but i was never informed to pay these taxes. When i do my taxes each year, i have never had to calculate these taxes on the forms i use. A friend i was talking to asked me how i never paid these taxes. I said i simply have never been asked to pay these... what should i do? The IRS has never contacted me, i dont get a form to pay these...? If i were to start paying these i couldnt survive on my salary. Should i ask my company to make me an employee instead or pay me a higher salary? Please help!!!
Canadian resident filing US tax return, how do I report income as an independent contractor? I am a Canadian resident and have received Form 1099-MISC for income I earned in the US as a subcontractor. There was no US tax withheld. Is anyone familiar with Article XIV of the Canada-US tax treaty? Does it mean I can opt to pay tax in Canada rather than the US on this income? I was physically present and working in the US but do not/did not maintain a fixed office there. Thanks form Little Bird!
LLC Corporation.. TAXES.. Independent Contractor? How would the taxes be handled if it is LLC corporation, and there is a non-american independent contractor.. Does the company pay taxes? Or does the independent contractor pay them? What form number would it be? Please Help!
What is the process of writing off vehicle mileage for an independent contractor? I own my own corporation and am working with a clsoe friend who is essentially working for me as an independent contractor. They aren't working for me LEGALLY as an independent contractor (no W-9 or other tax forms on file) but they are receiving regular pay for their services. The services that we provide require an extensive amount of travel in a vehicle which is in her name. She is looking to be compensated for the amount of mileage that she puts on the vehicle. Can I claim her mileage on my business tax return so that I can reimburse her for her mileage? Would she be able to claim it even though she is not officially an independent contractor? She does not want to have tax liability for the money she receives from me and that is why I have not issued W-9's, etc and have just given her cash. The girl that I am working with has essentially agreed to share my tax liability at the end of the year so all the money I have given her would still more or less end up on my business tax return.
Tax forms for small business? I'm a massage therapist and had to register my business in order to be an independent contractor and was wondering if I need to file any tax forms and what they are, thanks so much!
How do you pay an independent contractor? I'm currently an independent contractor working for a company. I get checks from them regularly without tax taken out. At the end of the year they send me a tax stub for the to do my own taxes. I'm interested in forming a small company (outside the field I work) and employ independent contractors in that specific field. How do I go about doing this? What information do I need from them? How do I do the taxes on my side of this? Do I write off the checks I send to my employees as expenses?
Are companies who I am an Independent Contractor for required to send me a 1099 form? I have done work with various companies as an Independent contractor. I get paid by the minute for two companies and they take a cut of my profits. Could this be why no 1099 form? I have never received a 1099 from from them like the others and I pay my estimated tax. Is this illegal? Are they required to issue me a 1099? I made more than $600 per year for each company.
What is the difference between a sub contractor and an Independent contractor. I am really having a hard time! I know the Independent contractor pays his taxes quartely and the Sub contractor does not! And that the Ind. pays the fica self employement taxes (medicare and social security) at the rate of 15.3% plus the federal and state taxes too. Is that the same for the Subcontractor as well. And I also heard that since my company is a partnership that if we were to get incorporated that we would be able to be exempt form the self employment tax! (fica) Is this true or not? We got a job offer from a company that wants us to be Independent contractors to work for them. But I am not sure if it is even worth it by the time we pay all of the taxes (or at least put the taxes to the side for quarterly pay) it seems that we would be broke. The job was i the area of around 50,000.00 a year paid every 2 weeks! Thank you

Independent Contractor???? Referee? What kind of tax form do I need to fill out for being an independent contractor? I am a referee in Michigan. Have made very minimal but need to claim it. Although probably won't have to pay much because I can write off a bunch. Please help and let me know exactly what to do.
Taxes for an independent contractor? I just started working as a transcriptionist (for an established company) as an independent contractor. From what I can tell, I should file a form 1040SE quarterly. Is this correct?
How do I fill out my taxes as an "independent contractor"? Hi! I received a 1099 MISC from my so called employer for 2008 taxes. I understand that receiving this form indicates I am something of an independent contractor. The company that sent me this form was a private tutoring company that brought tutors like me to students' houses to help them with their schoolwork. When filing my taxes this year, I was asked to fill out a form called the "Profit or Loss from Business (Sole Proprietorship)". It asked me to indicate information like, business name, address, and what my principle business code was. Yep, and there are other weird questions I'm not sure how to answer (e.g., What's my accounting method- cash, accrual, or other?). Do I just list my home address for the address? Make up a name for my company? (Genius Enterprises is sounding good) How do I find out my business principle code? Is there an additional form I'm missing out on that has the information I need? Thanks for your help!
How does an independent contractor file taxes? Is it hard? The court house in my area is hiring (well another company actually) for independent contractors to go to the local court house & look up information and enter it on my computer at home. You get paid so much for each form you enter correctly, so you can do it on your own time & do as much work as you want. You can also do work at more than one county court house. How hard would it be & what would I have to do to figure my own taxes? Would it be the same as someone who owns their own business? My mother-in-law owns her own business & I could ask her if it's the same. Also, I have checked & there are no up front fees and all you need is a way to the court house, typing skills and a home computer. Here's a link to a similar job offer, but not the exact one. http://www.getjob.us/usa-jobs-view/job-posting-17484.html Ok, found the original web site.... https://www.deedcollector.com/overview.aspx
What is the process for filing taxes if you are a dependent and an independent contractor? The company I work for says that I am responsible for taxes and I will be recieving a 1099 form but I am still dependent under my parents. I made no more than $1100
Reductions for Self-Employment Tax? I've been filling out the tax forms, and I worked as an independent contractor last year AND had a different job using a W2. I've figured out the taxes for the W2 job, and I think I've completed the taxes for the independent contractor job (using 1099-MISC and Schedule C). I'm just wondering it there are any deductions that can be applied to the self-employment tax. I've already made my deductions on business related expenses (car expenses, supplies, unpaid debt owed to me), but I was wondering if there's anything else. I am eligible for the Lifetime Learning Credit, but from what I understand, that's only deductible for the W-2 job. Is there a way to claim dependents or exemptions from self-employment tax? I have two exemptions. If not, why is it that self-employment tax doesn't use exemptions? I know it's a lot of questions...just trying to figure things out. Thanks! The instructions provided by the IRS says to deduct any unpaid debts owed to you. Once they are paid, you add it to your income in the year they are paid IF paid.
1099 form and independent contractor questions ? my husband has been laid off for a few months and he cannot find a job.. however I found a job for him online but its as a independent contractor it doesnt pay much but hey its a job! hes currently receiving unemployment.. the job requires for him to use his social for tax puposes my question is he has to go through training in which he will not be paid for, so if he uses his social to fill out the 1099 form but is not getting paid yet should he report that to unemployment or should he wait till he actually gets paid and then report it to unemplyment? or would they already no since he completed the 1099 form?
What am I supposed to do with Tax Form 1099-MISC? I work as an independent contractor with a massage therapy company. The only thing listed on the form is the nonemployee compensation. This is the second year I have ever filed taxes, so what exactly am I supposed to do with the form? Just hand it to my accountant and let her do the rest?
Taxes - first time independent contractor advice? This is my first year contracting/consulting. And I think I have some deductions (like a new computer). I had always done my taxes myself with the simple form, but now I need somebody to do them for me because I've no idea what happens now. How do you pick a tax preparer? Craigslist? H&R Block? Phone book? What qualifications do you look for? Do I need an actual CPA? What are reasonable rates? How does this work!? Thanks!
Can we hire only independent Contractors from our state? What forms do we need our independent contractors to fill out for taxes? We are located in Nevada. It is for my home-based travel agency.
Taxes for independent contractor/freelancer? I work full-time in a new gig (as of November) as an independent contractor - I did some part-time work with the place I work for over the summer. I am trying to figure out my taxes and I'm just going to end up sending them to an accountant. My employer did not fill out a W2 form or record how much he has paid me so far. My question is, what do I need to send into the accountant? I know I need to somehow need to go back and figure out just how much my current employer paid me in 2007. I also need to find the business expenses like travel. Second question: How do I figure out mileage to be reimbursed for my car? Thanks in advance for all your help. Thanks already - I have kept track of my work-related miles, do I just send a list to the accountant I'm assuming? And sorry to confuse - yes, I understand how much should be withheld since I'm hired as an independent contractor, I take 30 percent out of my paycheck each month and put it in a totally seperate savings account I'm reserving for tax time.
I employed an independent contractor last year. I am filling out and giving him a form 1099-MISC for? the money he earned last year (as a non-employee) The form 1099-MISC has a total of 5 pages. It appears that I need to give him only 2 of the 5 pages? I, the employer keep 3 pages ?? It appears that I have him the page that says: COPY B For Recipient COPY 2 To be filed with recipient's state income tax return, when required. Anyone have any ideas?
What is the difference between a 1099-MISC and a 1040C for an independent contractor? What is the difference between a 1099-MISC and a 1040C for an independent contractor? As a contract employee, so I have to file both? What is SE and does it require a different form? HELP! I'm lost in tax form flux!! My uncle (a CPA) made me feel like an idiot when I tried to ask him. :-( I recently (Sept 08) started working as an independent contractor for a non-profit foundation. Previous to this (January 08-July 08), I worked on a contract-basis for a university and was told it was considered nonemployee compensation (which I thought they said was a 1099-MISC). Because of my new contract, my husband and I will be in the 25% bracket for the first time and I'm just not sure that we've been putting enough away. I have paid no taxes on any of this and I'm wondering if I should have started paying quarterlies. TIA These are all really great answers and I appreciate everyone's input! Altogether, you've really helped me to better understand the situation. THX!
Child Suppor/No Proof of Income/Independent Contractor? Hello, I have a barber working in my shop as an independent contractor, he has worked here for 3 years. He is about to go to court regarding child support, however, he recently informed me that he has not paid taxes in the 3 years that he's worked in my shop. As an independent contractor he is obligated to handle his own taxes by himself or by a CPA, he also is supposed to turn in a 1099 MISC form for me to fill out for him. I the, owner am only obligated to take the rent and fill out 1099 forms (if given) to me by the indepedent contractor. It is not my obligation to give out 1099's. I pay monthly city taxes on each rental station per month, otherwise the rent is pays the bills and returns a small income. Anyways, I feel that I could receive trouble from state and IRS agents in the months and years to come because of this, How are they going to determine his income without investigating my shop, etc.... Thanks in advance....
Tax Question: I got paid to be a speaker at a conference in another state. The organization made me...? fill out all kinds of tax forms, where I had to essentially say that I was an independent contractor performing a service for them, etc. All the forms were properly filled out and given to the organization, so presumably they will report my earnings to the Feds. No problem... My question is - will they also report my earnings to the state? (West Virginia) And if so, do I need to fill out a tax return for that state, even though I don't live there? Or should I report the income to the state in which I live? Also, should I claim my mileage that I drove to get to the conference and back? I will get a 1099...
switching from independent contractor to being on payroll? I need to change my tax status from independent contractor to be on the company's payroll. I was supposed to send in the forms 2 1/2 months ago but was sick for a while and didn't do it until now. For some legal reasons these 2 1/2 months are supposed to be under payroll. Is there any way(legally, of course) that I could straighten out this and get the record to show that my payroll status starts in Oct or Nov, 2008? since it's almost 2009, ist there a deadline for something like this? and what kind of paper work would I have to file?
This is the first year to file a 1099 tax form. what do we do? My husband has been working as a independent contractor since janurary 2006. We have to file a 1099(right?) well, what are we able to write off on it.(cars, clothes, phone, gas expenses, etc?) and we just got married last month, so would it be better if we filed together or seperate? And do u know of any websites that will help us find this info. free of charge?
Pennsylvania Single Owner LLC Simple Tax Questions? I set up a new business as a single owner LLC in PA and I am doing my taxes myself. Haven't made much money until recently - and I am looking to file at the end of the year. #1 What tax forms do I file? #2 Am I taxed on the money I leave in the business account? #3 I have a few independent contractors working for me, and I made them fill out W9 forms...how do I handle that on the tax forms - do I have to 1099 them? Thank you!!
How do I get reimbursed for Gas Mileage and Food? This will be the first time that I file taxes with my current employer. Being that I'm an independent contractor, taxes are not deducted from my paycheck. I was once told that I could keep track of my mileage and all receipts pertaining to this job and I would be able to get reimbursed. The question is: how? What forms do I use? Would it be best for me to file through a third party like H&R block? I work for a courier company. I have receipts for gas/fuel, lunch (for myself and for times in which I've bought lunch for coworkers), cell phone bills; and I've kept track of my mileage for business.
Independent Contractor? How to report earnings?? Referee? How do I report this for tax purposes?? Even If I didn't make much?? I should be able to claim many expenses... Please help. What is the best form to use.. and should I do it quarterly or what? Please help..
As an independent contractor how do I fill out my income taxes for the CRA in the T2124 form? I worked as an independent contractor in 2007 in three different scenarios for a company helping move hospital, mystery shopping where I was paid for a service and as a telemarketer. I was told when I called CRA to fill out T2124, that looks to me like the actual owner of the business would claim that. How do I do my claims as an independent contractor then? Do I fill out that form and if so, how? All I know is the services I provided, how much I made and the companies names/addresses. I have no other information. CRA said they put in no slip for me, but I am still responsible to claim it because the business would have claimed it under business expenses or employee wages ( can't remember which). People must do this all the time, please help me, I can't find anything information on the internet!!!
How to report independent contractor earnings??? Please help? am a referee and I make minimal money. How do I report this? What form? Please help...Also, should it be done quarterly or what? i am sure with the deductions I can claim, the taxes would be low. please help.....
What form do I use for my business? I started a business in Sept. of 2006. I am the sole proprietor. The business has its own tax number. I do not draw earnings from this. I want to file this seperately from my personal taxes. I already filed my 1099 & 1096 for my independent contractors. Which forms should I fill out to report my earnings and expenses? And, Can I file it in just the company's name and just use my name as the owner/contact. I do not want this to be affiliated with my personal taxes. (I work a full time job that I claim as my income) Can I do This?
1099-MISC Independent Contractor? Well I got a 1099-MISC form in the mail today from the company who I work for. I work for Burger King as a Independent Contractor doing maintenance. I have been sending them invoices as it was requested by the owner of the two stores I work at. The problem that I see, if I went out to buy parts for the store, it would be listed in the invoice as well to get my money back. Well I counted all the bills that I send to them was and he including everything that I billed for in the Nonemployee compensation including the parts that I bought for the store. My question is: Ain't it wrong to include the parts that I bought to fix something in the whole compensation? My other question is: Is that I never charged taxes on anything, was I suppose to? If so how? Also: when filing the taxes, can I include the tools that I bought to do the jobs with in the forms somewhere? I am using Turbo Tax BTW :) Shane
1040-ES How do I file as an Independent Contractor.? Okay, my situation is a little bit unique so I will try to be as specific as possible. I have a normal job where federal taxes are deducted and I will make approximately $30,672.60 in 2008. I additionally work as an independent contractor this year and I expect to make $14,000. I have spent the last 2 hours trying to figure out the 1040-ES and here is the problem I face: I can figure out my expected taxes for 2008, but this form doesn't seem to offer a location to subtract my expected tax contributions from my normal job. Can anyone help me with this, so I can send the right amount in estimated taxes?
IRS Determining "contractor vs employee"? I worked for a company for 15 months as an Independent Contractor. No taxes were taken out and no insurance was offered. In that time, I was treated and represented to everyone inside and outside of the company as an employee. I even had managerial responsibilities. Reading up on the issue, I was definitely 'a common-law employee' I'm looking to hear from others who have successfully challenged their classification - from Contractor to Employees -by filling out the IRS SS-8 form. How long did it take to resolve the issue? How long did it take the IRS to render a verdict? What were your next steps after the IRS ruled in your favor? Was other legal remedies considered to right this wrong? What can I expect? Thank You
