I sub all my work out to Licensed contractors in their specific filed so I have no w2 payroll per say to speak of. How to protect myself from a general contractor performing home remodeling? I am about to have a general contractor perform services for me (tile in kitchen, wood flooring, wallpaper removal). He told me that there is no contract to sign, and that we both can sign the proposal he has given me to act as a contract. I trust the guy, as a trustworthy friend of mine recommended him, but what do I need to do to protect myself? Is there a simple contract I can draw up to ask him to sign? Where can I find it? Thank you.
What kind of discount should I expect from a contractor (for home remodeling) if I pay him in cash? (note: this is for a US contractor, in the San Francisco area... I thought this might be useful since I suppose this is somewhat related to tax rates) Ok, for the people who think I can not get any discount, please consider that if I pay the contractor in cash, then he doesn't have to declare his work so he doesn't pay taxes on this. Now, depending on his tax bracket, this would mean saving 20-30% (at least on the labor part). Just wondering how much of this saving they usually pass on to us (is a 10% discount fairly standard ?)
Has Anyone Here Ever Had A Positive Experience With Home Contractors? Excluding Home Depot and Lowes… I’m having some remodeling work done and I’m really starting to hate that I even started this project. The contractors never show up on time, and sometimes they say they are coming and don’t even show up. Now the one of contractors screwed up my door order (he reversed the doors-front & back) and now he’s giving me grief about it. And to think, someone recommended these screwballs!
home remodeling? what is the best way to find a dependable contractor? also, is it better to pay per diem or per project?
Any opinions on Custom Home & Remodeling Center in Westfield, MA? I'm looking to vinyl side my house myself and having problems finding siding. All the places I call only sell to contractors. I know Home Depot and Lowes have siding but I'm looking for a little more quality and choice of colors. I live in the Springfield Mass area.
Problems with my home remodeling contractor.? I live in Wisconsin and recently had my roof replaced by a roofing contractor with my insurance settlement. I have no issues with the work, but I have repeatedly tried to contact him to provide me with not only a receipt for the money that I paid him but also a receipt for the materials and labor involved. He simply avoids my calls and has not provided any paperwork to me in the past month. I hesitate to begin any type of legal proceedings but would like to know if there are any government organizations that may look into this issue for me and turn up the heat on him. There is the Better Business Bureau for one. Can anyone suggest any other entities that help protect homeowners from scandalous contracting?? Thanks for any ideas!
Anyone knows of a good directory website for general contractors? Thought i could save time asking the question rather then looking all over the internet for websites or directories where i can list my construction business. I am told there are places to advertise like construction directories. I would like to find a popular site where people really go to find contractors for home remodeling. Thanks

best home remodeling company in Minneapolis? I am in the process of buying my first home and the basement needs to be finished as well as a few new windows put in and the gutter replaced. I'm looking for a company that can do everything for me (maybe also some bathroom remodeling). Someone who is not ridiculously expensive, reliable, and timely. The rehab loan I am taking out requires that the work be done by an approved contractor and within 30 days of closing. All suggestions welcome! (the home I am purchasing is in Bloomington so a local twin cities company is preferred) Thanks!

Home remodeling questions - door, retaining wall, new circuit breakers, regrouting? This is regarding a house in Pittsburgh, PA. I just bought my first house and i'm kinda clueless about these things. 1. I need to install a fire-rated door or a solid-core door between the garage and basement. Right now there's a screen door only. I'd need to get a lockset installed. How much will labor and materials be? Is it cheaper to go with Lowes or Home Depot rather than local contractors? 2. The retaining wall is bulging and needs to be fixed. How much would this cost? I was told that the same stones could be reused to rebuild the wall. 3. The house is old and has fuse boxes. I need to get a new circuit breaker panel. Cost? Also have to change the old outlets to grounded ones. 4. I need to regrout the tiles by the tub in the bathroom and recaulk it. The tiles themselves are ok, just need to refinish. I've heard that this shouldn't be too expensive. Does anyone know any reliable contractors? I'm in the South Hills part of town.
statute of limitations for home remodeling? anyone know the statute of limitations for a contractor seeking un-approved dollars from a homeowner, where the project is relatively unfinished and there was no contract to execute work?

If you wanted to remodel your home would you? Hire a Contractor or Work with a remodeling broker? I am looking at starting a company that will be created to help homeowners who are looking to remodel their homes. Instead of hiring a contractor and have all of the worries, if they will run off with the money, or not do a good job. You would hire US a remodeling broker. We will have already checked out all the contractors we work with making sure they are insured, licensed, and spoken with their previous clients to see how they liked them.. We will be attempting to eliminate the worries of choosing to remodeling your home. What do you guys think?? Would you just hire a contractor or consider going with a remodeling broker?
Home improvement contractors: How do you protect yourself from surprises? For example, you are doing a remodel that seems to be pretty straight up but you open a wall and find major rot or termite damage or something that you deem structurally unsound. You don't want to put it back together unless the framing is done correctly but now you have to get into the drywall or plaster on the other side. Do you have a clause in your contract that covers this type of surprise? How is it worded? Thanks guys.
Home Depot Canada "You can do it, we can help"? Does anyone have experience using Home Depot Canada for home remodeling and renovations? How's their contractors? Are they better or worse, cheaper or more expensive than the average contractor you find in the phone book? Please share your experience.
Who do I hire for remodeling the motorhome? I just bought a motorhome. The exterior and machine and everything works great. Except interiors, it's all torn apart and damages. Who do I hire? I mean I can't find any shop or store that say motorhome remodeling and fix up. All I find was home improvements contractors. What I need is new walls, ceiling, bathroom, kitchens and flooring in motorhome. Who do I hire?
how do most people like to work the payment plan for remodeling? How do most of you guys like to work it? Im talking a higher number like $85,000 worth of remodeling... how do most of you like to do it as home owners and as contractors? half up front half when its done... half up front 3/4 at 3/4 the way through the rest when done? ways like these... whats everyones favorit? I just found out my home contractor has a Class A misdemeanor in another state. Should I fire her? I just found out through a friend that my remodeling contractor has a recent (within the last year) Class A misdemeanor against her. She didn't disclose this when I interviewed her. She hasn't started work yet. I don't know what the misdemeanor is for. Should I fire her? Is there reason to report this to someone? and if so, who? More details: My main issue is allowing this person full access to my home and property while I'm not there. More details. The license is under her partner's name, not hers, but she would be doing the bulk of the work, if hired. The partner has an established reputaion, but this person has only been working with him for 7 or 8 months. There's been no signed contract yet--this information came out during a cursory check. I asked her if there would be anything I would find in her reference check that would elliminate her from the contract and she said NO...that, to me is an omission. And thank all of you for not getting all bent out of shape about the question like some people do. This isn't about giving someone who did something stupid as a kid a second chance... I would never just fire someone (or not hire someone) just because they made one mistake, if they are willing to admit it. I posted this same question in "Law Enforcement" and got very different, even hostile answers. I think it's because, if you are on the hiring side, it's pretty important that the person that comes into your home is reliable, honest, and trustworthy. If you've ever violated the law, some may feel that people owe them a second chance.
Need ideas for my booth at a Home Show? Hi Everyone, I am setting up a booth at a Home Show in two days and this is my first time ever. It's for my business called CAD Drafting Solutions, LLC and I provide a CAD Drafting service to contractors, remodeling homeowners and lots more. I'm still within my first month of business and impatient with how slow it is moving so I am depending on this show to bring me customers. I'm quite nervous and want to be prepared as much as possible. What do I need to catch people's eye? What kind of hand out do you think is best and most informative? What do you like when you see a booth and it makes you walk over to it to check it out. These are just some questions to help you start but any suggestions are welcome. I already have some things ready to go but what to hear everyone's ideas so that it'll be more creative. Thank You.
Why can't I get my career together? I'm in my 40s, college-educated, a former US Naval Officer, and I've been bouncing around from career field to career field for 15 years. It seems as if I'm taking steps backward. I had such big dreams when I was younger, but I've kept taking jobs of less responsibility, and ones which require less intellect. In the past, I've stayed in a given field for 2-3 years and then bolted to try something else. At first it was OK, but now I'm married and in midlife. Now I'm working as a licensed home remodeling contractor, but I'm starting to wonder if I'll ever grow this business, or will I end up as some 62 year old man dragging his sorry butt into Home Depot at 7:30 each morning to get materials for handyman work. I look around and all I see are people who have *made it*. What am I doing wrong? I can't keep going like this.
home remodeling software/ideas/assistance? I am getting ready to remodel most of the rooms in my house. What are some great resources for me to pick colors, make the most of my current layout, general ideas? Software, websites, etc would be helpful before I decide to start calling contractors.
Home remodel question? We need to get our home remodeled, what we need most of all is new floors. Me and my mom want to take down panelling, which makes our living room look like a home from 1972, have workers put in a drywall, and all laminate wooden floors, which is cheaper than real wood floors. The problem is we don't have thousands and thousands of dollars to do this and our credit isn't that good is there any home repair contractors that will work with folks like us?
Remodeling a Bank REPO Foreclosed Home...How much $$ should I put in? I'm in the process of buying my 1st home. I'm 24 so I don't have much experience or knowledge about remodeling homes but am wondering if anyone could help me find a website or have knowledge that gives estimates on what the cost of repairing/remodeling houses would cost. I seen something recently on tv where there is a list/database that gives u estimates on renovating kitchen, furnaces, electric, plumbing..etc The house I looked at is priced around $30,000 apprasied for $92k in a nice quiet neighborhood the exterior is in good condition but it needs work on the inside and some updating. This particular house is just under 700sq ft but the lay out is nice and makes it feels bigger then what it really is. I have contacted a couple contractors on some of the things listed below but I want to make sure I won't be getting ripped off. How much would it cost to: 1. to get a new furnace & hotwater tank 2. repair 2 minor holes in the wall maybe about 1-2ft been punched out from the previous owner out of anger. 3. carpet for three rooms? bd rooms 11x9s Thanks for the advice. The renovations will be paid in cashed. I estimate it would take between $2500-$3200 with the furnace/watertank included in price. I was qouted $1000 for both a furnace and water tank with a 2 year warranty but this sounds cheap esp for a furnace. Installation/service fee was not included in the price though. What would the labor fee usually cost?
What should my home remodeling estimate include????? We are in the shopping phase of remodeling our home. This will be my first time gathering estimates for remodeling and I’m hoping that the good people on Yahoo and answers could aide in my shopping and estimate phase. Here’s what I need: What should my estimate encompass? So far one contractor sent me an excel spreadsheet with the breakdown of the work we discussed during his walk thru. However, he estimated the cost per room for what we requested but there is no breakdown between estimated cost of supplies vs. Labor. Will this come later in the process or should I know this up front. Everyone is telling me that his prices are good and he’s coming from a personal referral. However, I’m not sure what I should be asking for and at what stage. Ps. I know that at some point we will get together and choose the exact items that I want and I’m sure I’ll see receipts, but should I be expecting such a breakdown at this early stage? Thanks
I am purchasing a 20 year old manufactured home, how do I find a remodel contractor? I'm finding great info on manufactured/mobile homes here. So, anyone know where I can begin to search and choose a good contractor to make repairs and update my home? I have no clue how to go about looking for a person or company to do this. How could I find out if they are any good, quality, reasonable prices? Repairs include: Tie-down, whole house filtration system, remodel space to fit the water heater and filtration system, carpeting, new shower/tubliners, new sinks, etc. I've watched that show Flip This House and one lady had a contractor she worked with. He directed everything. Basically all she had to do was pay for the materials, his service, the workers (plumber/tile) and paint herself here and there. Your insights are appreciated!
Cost of a General Contractors License/Business Insurance? Over the last couple of years, I have turned a small handyman operation into a slightly larger business doing home remodeling. The projects I am now contracting for will necessitate hiring a few employees on an ongoing basis, and I am certain that I will need to be licensed to engage in most of the tasks I will be doing, as well as obtaining insurance. Does anyone have any idea how much money I will be looking at in order to legitamize my business, and what exactly will I need to acquire? Thanks in advance for your help! My business is located in the metro Atlanta, Georgia area.
did anyone ever use home depot contractor service? im thinking of doing a bathroom remodel i thought it would be easy to use my home depot credit card to purchase and pay for contracting services all in one....has anyone used home depot for this???? is it inexpensive? i need tile flooring instal new pedestal sink and painting....
Requirements when wanting to remodel and rent a home? I live in California and am curious as of the requirements/paperwork needed to be able to possibly purchase a small home, re-landscape, as well as re-carpet/tile floors and such of the like, to then rent. Would a basic contractors license work, or are there many different angels which must be covered as well?
Tax implications for husband (a professional general contractor) to remodel our home? We're FTHB of a home that needs some work done before we can move into it. My husband is a GC and would like to take a few weeks to complete the work. Can his labor be tax deductible or included in basis because of his professional/licensed GC status as well as because he will be taking time off from work? Or, because he's the homeowner putting in his own labor that we can't take it into account for tax purposes and we're not "officially" paying him for his services? Does his time away from performing work for customers to do work for our own home account for anything?
How do I locate a local contractor? I'm interested in doing a few small projects in my condo (refacing cabinets, new flooring, new countertops), but I'm having trouble finding a contractor. Places like Lowes and Home Depot seem to be geared towards big home remodeling projects. My real estate agent was a nightmare, so I wouldn't trust anyone she suggested. And my boyfriend and dad are very capable, but it would take forever, it would be completely inconvenient for them, and I want to do this on my own since it's my place. Any suggestions? Thanks for the suggestions. I tried the yellow pages and online, but there are so many that I was overwhelmed. I'll try again - because I didn't consider that someone might give me a referral.
Does a contractor or an architect do this? I am interested in building homes for people. I have a dream to one day build myself a huge home haha. But my question is, is it the job of an architect or a contractor to build and remodel homes? Thanks for any help!
