Is liability insurance necessary for a mechanical design engineer working as a contractor without an agency? I am a mechanical design engineer working in product development in the U.S., and I am pursuing work as a contractor. I have a potential client that is willing to hire me and pay a gross salary without an agency. Do I need my own liability insurance? I am not a licensed PE, if that makes any difference.
How much do electrical contractors make? How can an electrical contractor with 6 years of military(air force) experience and an associates degree in Mechanical & Electrical technology expect to earn (I know the economy is bad, but what if it wasnt?)
Hi! I am a mechanical contractor. Worked for someone, 3 small jobs, now they won't pay.? Filed a lien on the property. It is two houses on 1 acre and rental property. Bill is about $1000. Sent letter and statement. Notified of lien. Now what should I do? They live in California and I am in New Mexico. Thanks!
What kind of certification do you need to service and repair AC and Heating systems in Florida? I understand that you need EPA certification in Florida, but what other certification is required? Tech school training? Also would this include being able to change out condensers and air handler units? And also is it legal to do these services for profit without a Mechanical Contractors License in Florida? Can anyone tell me of a website or who I would need to contact for this information?
Does the navy build there own planes or has it been taken over by defense contractors? I would really like to go to USNA and get a degree in mechanical engineering specializing in aviation. Then, when I get out of the military I would build and design planes. So, I am wondering if after I get out of USNA I can design and build the planes that the navy uses.
How do I get a Doc Leak Test Certificate? Mechanical Contractor? Anyone heard of this? My uncle has finished building his home in Alhambra, CA. When the inspector came for the final inspection of the electrical box, he notes that we need a certificate from a mechanical contractor to submit a Doc Leak Test Report to the state and get a certificate for completing the report to show the City of Alhambra. The General Contractor my uncle hired is incompetent and I don't know how he got his license, but he doesn't know what it is and barely speaks English. So I am asking my questions here and hoping someone can shed some light into the process of getting this certificate. Can my uncle hire another contractor for this job? Okay I understand they need to be licensed, but the licensed guy doesn't know what he's doing so I already paid him so I don't want to find another guy. Can someone tell me if this Title of this Certificate called? Or where can I find the form to fill out?

If a contractor files a mechanical lien in court and looses his argument what happen? The contractor was paid in full for the project but charged a penalty for not completing the project by the completion date per contract that was signed. Now I am being threatened with a mechanical lien which will stop me from selling the property. Because I have a contract with the appropriate stipulations; if we go to court and show proof of contract signed by all parties, and it is proven that the owner was within his legal right to uphold the contract can the owner sue the contractor for time lost for not being able to sell investment property? The right term is actually a mechanic's lien (error in phrase)... There is such thing as a mechanic's lien....
Nevada state HVAC contractor for service work? I've checked out the Nevada state contractors board but I'm having difficult finding out if I need a contracting license to just do repair work on A/C and swamp coolers. I see other Mechanical business have them. Anyone know if a contractors license is needed to just run repair service?
Why don't plumbing and HVAC supply houses sell to the public if electrical places do? A person can walk into an electrical supply house, and they will sell anything to the public. But if the same person goes to a mechanical supply house (to try to buy a furnace, A/C condenser, etc.), they will only sell to licensed contractors of that trade. Why is that? It doesn't make sense that they would purposely turn away sales and business if someone really wanted to buy what they were selling. I can't understand the logic of turning away customers.
Any advice on how to contract out plumbing, electrical and general maintenance repairs for apartments? I manage 67 apartment units and have all janitorial/housekeeping issues covered, but I'd like to contract out for the mechanical repairs. Any suggestions on how to do that so there won't be surprises when the bills come? I'm thinking there would be a need for multiple contractors to handle specialized repairs (i.e. plumbing, electrical, etc.)
Contractor doesn't pay sub-contractors? What are your options if you hire a contractor to do some work in your house and pay the contractor in full but he/she fails to pay their subcontractors. The subcontractors are placing a mechanical lien against them and they have already paid the contractor for services.
Know anyone that loves their job, what do they do for a living? I do not feel like I am very aware of the kinds of jobs out there that are really enjoyable. Obviously everyone is different so I will tell you some jobs that seem interesting to me are: Contractor, Real Estate Investor, Mechanical Engineer, Financial Adviser, Landscape architect, Interior design, Import/ export, Carpenter, Product design, Machinist. If you love your job please tell me what a typical day is like. Also what is a good path to get that job.

What jobs should I be looking into when going into the US Navy? I am looking to eventually get my degree in engineering, either mechanical or aeronautical, and eventually working with a defense contractor. I would like to get my security clearances in the Navy first as that looks very good to a defense contractor. What fields should I be looking into?
What is your opinion of Civil Engineers? It seems to me that not a lot of people outside the realm of Civil Engineering have a high opinion of Civil Engineers especially Construction Managers, Contractors, Architects, Construction Trades, Designers, etc. Even in college, other engineering majors deemed that Civil Engineering is for people that couldn't hack it in Electrical, Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering. They think that Civil Engineering is the easiest out of all the engineering fields. What's your opinion of Civil Engineers?
Anyone who knows anything about military defense contractors, please answer this? I am a sophomore in high school, and want to get into something like this but don't really know what. I know I want to design/make/create/ weapons and when I say weapons I mean firearms and missiles/missle defense systems. Let me give you a little info about myself, so maybe you can recommend me to some field. I am in 10 grade, love math to death. Good at American History and conflicts. Love cleaning/shooting guns, also like to hunt. Always and I mean Always sit around thinking about designing my own firearm, and make a patent and sell it. I plan on enlisting in either the Marine Corps or Navy and that is not debatable I will do it, so I need to pick a job there that will benefit me later. Don't know about college or what to go to college for yet, just know something like Mechanical engineering or something. I just mainly want to design and create weapons for the military, working for a military contractor. And I really don't want to be working on weapons like vehicles and armoured vehicles and tanks and stuff like that, just firearms or missiles/(defense systems maybe, I don't know about that one yet) I would like to make around 60k and up per year, would really like about 80k but anything higher than 60k is good.. btw, I have taken algebra 1&2 and geometry, and will be taking pre-calculas next year then calculus then I don't know what, along with physics as well.
How can I best avoid the consequences? I work as a mechanical engineer. I signed off on some drawings telling the contractor to drill through some structural beams for some pipes, causing the beam to collapse and injuring 3 people. I didn't feel like doing the calculations or telling anyone as I was high when I told them to do it and I forgot. Now they want to take my license away and I have been fired. I feel like my rights are infringed. Who can I sue? How can I avoid the consequences? Change my name or flee?
Does anyone know of a good Jeep mechanic (classic 1954) in Kern County CA? I am a painting contractor and can do some mechanical work but I certainly am not a mechanic. I am looking for a good jeep mechanic in the Bakersfield area or a Jeep club in Bakersfield? Your response is greatly appreciated.

Mechanical Lien? I hired masory contractor to do masonry work. Written contract for 4k, paid 4k, signed by both parties. Masonry guy asks contractor to do carpentry work & extend roof line for $900 verbal contract w/ contractor. Mind you, he used my materials. Contractor tells masonry contractor upon doing work to make sure he seals roof line because of rain that night. Masonry guy leaves roof decking open by 5inches and it floods interior of home. Myself and General Contractor told him of his mistake and showed him how much damage occured. All cielings/Walls in living, master room and den had water damage and had to be gutted out as well as insulation and replaced. This cost was well over $2000 including labor/materials. Masonry guy now has hired legal aid and was demanding 7k. Showed legal my paid contract of 4k. Legal aid now says I owe 3k and is threating to file mechanical lien. Verbal agreement was $900, but he has fabricated this price & says he bought materials. Can he get away with this?
Mechanical engineer looking for a career change, please advise? I am a bachelor in mechanical engineering with a diploma in mech. engg. I started my career as a project engineer for a fire-fighting company(6months). Then i worked as a project engineer at a site for a leading petroleum company in india for construction of pressure vessels(3years). Then I worked as a maintenance engineer for a private contractor to a leading engineering company(3years). After this i joined a BPO and started my new career as a Customer service associate. Its been almost 4 years now that i am working as a sr. customer service associate. I have worked for 3 international BPO's taking calls, mostly for semi-technical ISP processes. But now I want to make a career change as i feel saturated taking calls for such a long time. Can anyone suggest a new career path where i can use my engineering and communication skills? Thank you.

looking into Systems career from Mechanical? I'm currently working in the nuclear naval field as a mechanical/nuclear engineer. I started going for my MS in Systems Engineering recently as the generic systems engineering description sounds like it is something I want to do. I started looking at some jobs in the DC metro area (that is where I want to live), and it appears that all "systems engineers" are closely related with computer science, EE, IT, and information systems.. Is this the case for the most part, or am I just not searching right? I hope to get some insight from govt or govt contractor employed systems engineers When i mean Systems Engineering, i mean this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Systems_engineering This is the program I an enrolled in: http://www.emse.gwu.edu/focus/focus_se.html Obviously, im not studying on the main campus, but at an off campus site.
Is this a good reason for me to pursue a Masters degree in mechanical engineering? I already have my Bachelors degree in mechanical engineer and have worked as an aerospace engineer for 2 years at a medium sized defense contractor (who is willing to pay for my graduate tuition). I researched a good program that fits my needs. I can go to class at night and take only one class at a time. However, the classes are still going to be intense and I the only reason I would be pursuing the degree would be: (1) because I want to advance higher in my company quciker than my peers (2) a little more money is always nice. I am married and am expecting children in the next 5-10 years. The above don't sound like good reasons but I do have a keen interest in intense mathematical rigor. I work in the advanced materials stress analysis group at my company, but it is not the main reason why I want to pursue the degree. I just don't feel like stressing myself and my wife out. Is it really worth it for the reasons I list above? o.k. another reason why I am considering pursuing the degree. I just feel like the aerospace industry, which I work in, is very unstable. We just went through some massiave downsizing when I just hired in (I was cheaper to the company because I was fresh out of college). Would a masters degree increase my marketability in the future? My dad always told me, if two candidate for a job have the same basic qualifications, they will choose the guy with the masters degree. is this generally true?
hello friends .. i am a mechanical engineer 2007 pass out.. now doing business with my father as a contractor? i passed out my engineering in 2007 but didnt join the job. i worked with my father as at that time because he needed me in his business. but i want to do job now, can you suggest me from where should i start , i am in dilema that should i continue the business with my father or not.. sometimes i think that i am spoiling my degree. now i am preparing for sbi clerical exams also. i m in a great confusion. i dont know what should i do???? please help.... thanks in advance....
i HATE my new job! beware Construction/Engineering/Mechanical students? After 5 months & 221 job applications! i was finally offered employment at a Construction company as a Trainee Graduate Engineer, the vacancy i applied for stated the job was Permanent and upon a successful interview, i received an lettered contract, stating the job would be temporary 12 months leading to permanent if suitable, with a 6 months probationary period (confusing, i know). Though a little surprised, i accepted the job and im currently in my forth week. THE COMPANY SUCKS!! A lot of my colleagues aren’t friendly at all. I have most defiantly NOT been given any proper training, i realised this after 2 days of doing NOTHING!, I’ve resorted to walking around the office and trying to get some of the kinder colleagues to let me watch what they’re doing and give me tasks. My so-called manager just sits me there at the desk doing irrelevant tasks, though he sounds relaxed he is a penny counting, sly snake like person who I’ve already witnessed him con workers into paying more than they should for entry to the company’s Christmas party. I did think to myself, Why is no one training me?, Why does it feel like the position WASN’T even needed?!!!!!!!!!! Then a friendly colleague of mine let it slip that the company was given the construction project to take on by the local authority PROVIDING that the company would employee 2 graduate trainees from areas of high unemployment for a MINIMUM of 6 months, its seems to be adding up that after 6 months (having satisfied the local authority) they are going to let me go, obviously they anrt providing training so i won’t be good enough to be offered a permanent position once the 6 months probationary has past. Infact because i know how sly and tight he is, im quite sure it will happen. I couldn’t get a reference from my past employer (went bump) and if my new company were to terminate me at the end of the 6 months (which i believe they will, because of the above) i won’t be able to use them for a work reference either, So i would effectly leave a 19 months gap in employment on my CV, not good! The contract i signed stats either party can terminate after 6 months with 1 weeks notice, but could i terminate before that in anyway without this con company trying to charge me? Believe me this company are capable, especially my manager. When i was at University i was told a few times that alot of the Construction contractors treat new young workers like shit, i warn anyone studying for a career in Project Management, Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Commercial, etc. to be careful.
What kinds of yard signs/posts would you use to warn dog walkers about not leaving dog poo behind? The ones I can think of are contractor signs with two metal legs that go in the ground, or large butterfly or flamingo (fake of course) posts that you can get from OSH and stick to the ground, to which I'll attach a sign that asks dog walkers not to leave anything behind. Other options I thought about are low lying cactuses at their favorite poo spots, or a mechanical trigger attached to a projectile or punching iron fist (just kidding).
Estimating crane size...? Is there an effective utility for estimating the required size of a crane? I’m an estimator for a mechanical contractor, and it seems we never allow enough money for crane rental. How can I effectively adjust my estimates?
looking for a master plumber.? im looking for a master plumber for pulling permits for some of my jobs. i had a friend that pulled permits for me that he passed on from cancer. im a mechanical contractor in heating and a/c plus a have a license in boilers from the state of mich.
What should an Entry Level HVAC Design Engineer Study to prepare for the job with little to no experience? I just got hired as an HVAC Design Engineer for an MEP Firm. I have a Mechanical Engineering Technology Degree BS, and have had one internship with an mechanical contractor in the HVAC business. The internship dealt with P.M. duties, so I did not receive any design experience. I hardly have any experience dealing with HVAC design. I understand the mere basics of how an HVAC system works. Other than this I have no experience. The job starts in 2 months when I graduate and I will be working with an experienced engineer. Does anyone have any suggestions to what I could study or books I could look into to help me prepare and have somewhat of a handle on things once I get there. Thanks for the advise>
Please tell me what good republicans want for this world? Trying to play nice. I hear the same argument about not wanting to give poor people your dollars..and yadayadayda. Please don't tell me I want you to pay for my insurance, so i'm angry with you lol. I have blue cross blue sheild and my co-pay goes up what seems like every years just like anyone else in this world. All i'm asking is please explain this to me. I am rather uneducated when it comes to politics and want to learn about all sides:) I just want to let you all know my demographics before people start judging me. I am a 27 year old, caucasion women from Iowa, I am a receptionist during the day and two days a week I go to school . I have three children:) A wonderful husband who is a mechanical contractor who works out of town most of the time. Thanks for grown up non judging answers, as i'm trying to grow up a little on here:) Thank you The Answer You Wanted for answering kindly. Just a decent answer makes me want to learn more about republicans and other parties:) No, I am am very much from America. I am just tired and can't sleep, a mixture of weirdness . Also, I have never been known to be much of a writer:)
Part time work better off as a 1099? ? Hi, I recently was offered a job with a mechanical contractor. I was told from the outset it's part time work and maybe 15 -20 /week hours at best. He wants to pay me "piecework" for each installation. I would be using my own truck, my own tools and my own gas etc. I complete each job, bring the invoice to him and he cuts me a check. No tax or anything taken out on his end. What can I expect to pay tax wise and are there examples of deductibles I could use? I don't need the benefits or 401k but I do think I need to negotiate a higher rate to compensate for tax and expenses. Any help greatly appreciated, just trying to make ends meet any way I can in this economy...
I have a problem with interlock ignition device after a decade of loss, it is not enough debt to Arizona..? In 1998 I picked up and ended my commercial apprenticeship with The Helm Corporation a Mechanical Contractor out of Denver and run a residential new construction Plumbing company with an endless number of Cracker Jack Box Homes to plumb. My Dad after 25 year Master Plumbing Career got licensed, bonded and insured a company of his own, got his "foot in the door" with a huge tract home developer in the epicenter of a booming housing market that transplanted 3 million Americans into Metro Phoenix and surrounding cities from 1980-2000... I learned every Phase of residential new construction plumbing underground's, top-out's, trims and that residential construction homes go up fast and cheap and after work I enjoyed frequenting a circuit of club's and bar's. I had racked up 3 DUI's by the motion of continuance to put off the damage(at the time a day in jail was damage) as long as I could from the first 1, and the 2nd, then I picked up the 3rd DUI in June 2001 and was book into jail with $30,000 bond, Indicted by a Grand Jury, and served three Class 4 Felony's... June 25 2001 I was sentenced to the AZ DEPT. OF CORRECTIONS and released Feb 2004 with 4year's of probation. Let's say the 25 year old go getter that went on the Grey goose tour of Arizona wasn't the same and probation didn't last long... After a sick animal is rehabilitated and caged up the animal doesn't act the same after the "release" and most won't reintegrate back into the wild, right??? I was released Sept 2007 with 5 month's of parole, same old story except a few more of a man's greatest year's down the tubes violated parole and sent back to finish 3 month's of the parole completing the DOC term's for the DUI's. The beginning of my incarceration I was booked and sent to level 5, 4, 3 yard's throughout the years. Those last 3 months I had a spiritual awakening... I came to a point where I realized my life would never be and I could waste away in prison turning old and frail... Today I'm 34 and just passed the 12 month's of interlock ignition I was sentenced to with no alcohol fails, in fact I have been clean since 2007... last month I was late blowing into the machine on 3 separate occasion's due to a faulty ignition in my 4runner and still blew 000's 7, 8, and 9 minutes after the 3 requests to submit... The device locked up and I had to go to the calibration site, charged $75 and told the mvd would contact me about an extension which I soon received in the mail extending the interlock devise for another year. I requested a hearing with the Executive Hearing Office held yesterday over the phone. The judge can void the extension or continue the sanction. The violation is tampering to circumvent the IID in which I explained would be impossible to catch a buzz during the three 7, 8, and 9 minute period's that I didn't submit a sample... and blow 000''s directly after... I also explained that I have had no violation since fixing my ignition cylinder. The judge will vacate the extension directly after I send the receipt from the mechanic that fixed the ignition and I will be finished with those dui's from 2000/2001 completely... Now I can't find the receipt and have been thinking of forging one just to finally be rid of this... I left a message with the judge around 4pm yesterday and haven't heard anything back... I need some good suggestion's because the thoughts I'm having are unstable and self defeating but if printing up a receipt that I lost and faxing it to her can't hurt, right??? Do you think she will call the mechanic??? She said she just needed the document to write her decision out... My mechanic is sketchy and doesn't want to deal with the court's so this is what really foul's me up... If I tell the judge my mechanic doesn't want to deal with the court's what is going to think??? I think she said a 3 day hold is in place towards the end of the hearing, I hope that means I have 3 day's to fax the receipt??? I would like to thank you in advance for spending some time getting to know my dark past and ask that comment's are respectful and directed to solving the problem not what I could have done differently because the past is gone and I can't change it but I can recommend frequenting your local library's, find out what law's politician's are making, current event's, learn the law's that apply to you, there are MANY... I wish I would have known not having a license aggravated a DUI from a misdemeanor to a Felony... Since I can't pick them all, I will do my best to choose what I think is the best solution...
When I see things like this it makes me sick - President Obama Thong? Now do you know why we must protect our President? White House Lawyers Look to Limit Commercial Use of President Julianna Goldman – Fri Jan 30, 4:16 pm ET Featured Topics: Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Barack Obama’s popularity makes him a marketer’s dream. Now, the honeymoon may be over for those trying to profit from his appeal. White House lawyers want to control the use of the president’s image, recognizing the worldwide fascination about Obama’s election, First Amendment free-speech rights and easy access to videos and photos on the Web. “Our lawyers are working on developing a policy that will protect the presidential image while being careful not to squelch the overwhelming enthusiasm that the public has for the president,” White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said. Obama’s calls for change and his “Yes We Can” campaign mantra are being evoked to sell assembly-required furniture in Ikea’s “Embrace Change” marketing campaign, bargain airfares during Southwest Airlines Inc.’s “Yes You Can” sale and “Yes Pecan” ice cream at Ben & Jerry’s Homemade Inc. shops. “I can’t remember this ever happening to an active politician before, as a spokesperson or as an image for a brand,” said Brad Adgate, director of research for Horizon Media Inc., a New York-based advertising agency. “He’s in the highest profile of any person in the world right now.” Riding the wave of Obama’s popularity may become a concern when advertisers use his likeness without permission to imply that Obama is endorsing a product or cause. The White House through the years has objected to commercial use of presidential faces, such as footage of President George H.W. Bush in a Cold War-themed 1989 television ad for cold medication. Presidential Speeches The National Education Association is running a TV ad with excerpts from a speech Obama gave on July 5, 2007, with the group’s logo behind him. The educators’ group has previously shown remarks by Obama in Web videos and is confident the president shares a “clear and longstanding” commitment to “real change and real reform in education,” said Steve Snider, NEA’s manager of advertising and broadcast services. The Web site for McKinstry Co., a Seattle-based mechanical contractor that Obama visited during last year’s presidential campaign, features a YouTube clip of Obama praising its work improving energy efficiency at schools and office buildings. “As president I’ll use companies like McKinstry as a model for the nation,” Obama says. McKinstry spokeswoman Genevieve Guinn said the company bought rights to the video and hasn’t gotten any White House complaints. Obama’s face is on a full-page newspaper advertisement by the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity, a lobbying group in Alexandria, Virginia. Burning Coal “We figured out how to put a man on the moon in 10 years,” the ad quotes Obama as saying last August. “You can’t tell me we can’t figure out how to burn coal that we mine right here in the United States of America and make it work.” The group also began running a TV ad in December that shows footage of Obama promoting clean-coal energy during a campaign event last September. The clean coal lobby group told Obama representatives about the ads before the inauguration and received no signals from them that there was any discomfort, As a record-setting crowd jammed Washington earlier this month for Obama’s inauguration, Obama’s face was featured on thousands of t-shirts, coffee mugs and calendars for sale at stores and street vendors across the capital. Obama’s official inaugural committee got into the act, too, setting up its own memorabilia store. Malia, Sasha Dolls Since the Obamas moved into the White House, Michelle Obama objected to the sale by Beanie Babies-maker Ty Inc. of dolls with the same names as her daughters. The company said the Sweet Sasha and Marvelous Malia dolls weren’t modeled after the first daughters. A search for Michelle Obama’s name on Google Inc.’s Web site brings up an online ad for J. Crew Group Inc., which got free publicity when the first lady wore a J. Crew outfit on NBC’s “Tonight Show With Jay Leno” last October. “Inauguration Style: Get Looks Like Those Worn by the First Lady” the Web ad says. Psaki wouldn’t provide details about legal options the White House counsel’s office is considering to deal with commercial use of Obama’s likeness. The White House lawyers may have to make case-by-case determinations about the best ways to protect the presidential image without tempering enthusiasm or trampling on free-speech protections, said Jonathan Band, an intellectual property lawyer in Washington. “It will be difficult,” Band said. “Because he is the president of the United States and there was this campaign and everyone’s proud, I think the First Amendment will be applied much more broadly with respect to people wanting to use an image of the president than it would be with
The fan on my condensing unit keeps cutting off, but the compressor keeps running.? I've changed the capacitor, fan motor, contactor, and transformer, but with the same results after only about 10 minutes. I am at wits end. I'm not a service tech, but I work for a mechanical contractor and know my way around an a/c unit, just not troubleshooting. I wired it the same way as it was before when it was working. NEED HELP. I don't have a programmable t-stat.It is your standard issue. The system has been working just fine till Sunday when all of these problems started.
how come all the ceiling lights in my house went out together? I'm a mechanical contractor so I believe I'm pretty handy. However, I'm no electrician. I installed a new bathroom exhaust fan last night and after struggling with the wiring for a while, I got it working. After I had it running for a while I noticed it flickering a bit (kinda stuttering). Then today, every ceiling light upstairs went out! The light over the sink in the bathroom has two switches that run it and the fan has one. The power came from the switch and I hooked black-black, white-white and ground-ground. The only wires that aren't hooked to anything are the whites from both switches, the reds are spliced. After much research about wiring last night, I'm pretty sure that everything is hooked up right. Any ideas? Ok, so the white wires as far as I can tell come from each of the 3 way switches. There are four wires in each of these cables. So the blacks from these are together, the whites aren't hooked to anything and the reds are connected. The grounds of everything are connected and screwed to the box. There are no breakers tripped either. I checked all the wires with a digital meter and no more than one volt was read. There is one light upstairs that still works, so not all of them are out. There are two lights in a closet, one blinked when I pulled the cord this morning and the other still works but I can shut it off with the breaker. They are about three feet apart so I would have to assume they are in order in the same circuit? This closet abuts the garage almost directly over the breaker box and the bathroom is on the other side of the bedroom about 15 feet away.
ryobi tools vs premiums tools give me a reason? hi everybody!! ok everyone is saying ryobi tools are really bad, they are crap can some give me a reason why? I mean a mechanical walkthrough, or maybe if you have ever owned a ryobi? like it breaks down or something? or people say its crap because ir does not have the same power as the makitas and dewalts? I want to hear stories, not an opinion that they dont live up to contractor use. I am just trying to hear facts and past owners stories.
Can a subcontractor of a subcontractor file a contractor lien for this reason?? I hired a subcontractor to do a mechanical rough in for new construction. I buy materials (he places order) and pay him to do the job. I have been noticing the orders are getting bigger, but there are no materials left over. I suspect he is stealing it and using on his other jobs. I stopped payment on the last payment until I sought legal advice and figured about how much is missing. He denies stealing, although it is very obvious...just going in each house and comparing material order confirms my suspicions. He now is going to the General Contractor, whom I work for and threatening to put a mechanical lien on the properties in question. I tried to settle this between me and him...without pressing charges on him for stealing. Now I am forced to pay him the $6000 while I have found he has stolen almost $4500 in materials over the last 3 months. What should I do???
Ladies, would you date a guy with this job? (dont say his job doesnt matter because i know girls who say they'd never marry teachers, etc) He's an environmental engineer whose responsibilities include field sampling, field oversight of drilling contractors, data compilation and evaluation, cost estimating, mechanical evaluation of remediation systems, field tasks related to remediation systems, communicate project status to supervisors and report preparation.

Question about load bearing walls? Last year my husband and I bought a one story ranch that was built in 1945. The kitchen has a laundry room addition built off of it. The wall separating the laundry room and the kitchen is one of the original outside walls of our house - the wall just has an open doorway to the laundry room, and where there was obviously a window before the addition was built, they simply made it an interior window between the two rooms. We are wanting to remodel the kitchen and remove the wall between the two rooms to make it one big room (both rooms are extremely small now... I'm talking each is 9x7.5). I was reading on one website that load-bearing walls is only an issue in multi-story houses. Is that true? My husband is a mechanical engineer, but we are in our early twenties and don't have a lot of experience with things like this. If load-bearing walls is a concern even in one story homes, is there a way my husband can tell if it is a load-bearing wall, and if not, what kind of contractor should we call? Does anyone have any idea how much this might cost? Also, If it helps, our house has no basement and is on an 18" raised concrete slab.

Is a "foot in the door" job a good idea? I'm graduating with my BS in Mechanical Engineering in December, and was hoping to get a job as a consultant or work for a contractor doing Heating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) design build work in the Seattle area. However, the HVAC industry tends to be very fraternal, and I don't live anywhere near Seattle (I live in Hawaii). I don't think I'll be getting any callbacks on the resumes I sent out (had one interview and was rejected already). I found a company that is sort of in my field, but is not engineering work as much as I'd like. They are a manufacturer's rep, and I already work for one, so I'd be more likely to get the job. Moving up there would be a financial endevor (I have the money, but it's still costly to move) and I'm just worried that I might not be able to find the kind of work I want. Would this place be a good "foot in the door" job in your opinion? Would it be a good idea to take it if I got it?
Officership in the Navy or Air Force? I recently posted a question pertaining to the nuclear program and my options pertaining to it. I found out my g.p.a was too low to be considered for the NCO(NUPOC), hell even this guy from M.I.T who had a 3.75 was rejected because of the same reason, so I know they are very strict. I graduate in half a year from now and would like to know if I still have a shot of making it into the Nuclear program as an officer. If not, then is the Air Force more feasible for me. I didn't even consider the Air Force until i asked a question pertaining to my line scores from it after the navy shafted me on three accounts. One having too many credits for the enlisted side and second my age since I'm 24 turning 25 if I were to enlist, and lastly due to the fact that my g.p.a is too low even though I have a 3.64. I can understand the g.p.a part since it is a competitive field. I recently looked into the Air Force and found a classification I liked, 9s100. I thought about this because I am majoring in chemistry(B.A. Only) and mathematics and it gave me an interest, but someone responded and told me officership would best suite me. For anyone who has been in the officership program, would a mathematician with a chem background be useful, if so, what jobs would be open to me? Honestly, I would like to join the Nuclear Program. From what the officer recruiter told me, the credits are transferable, especially at RPI, one of the nations premier engineering schools. He also stated that a young woman went to MIT after the nuclear program and one year of her masters done through the navy nuclear program. My plan is to do the same and hopefully get a job with a defense contractor in the private sector or work for the Naval Research Labs. I'm also wondering if they would be even more stringent due to the fact that many officers leave and go to the private sector because the recruiter stated that most of the NCO's leave and start working for the private due to the high pay(Starting 140k and more for naval officers in the nuclear field), which was what I was planning to do as well. LOL. I took the asvab because I thought it would have helped me with the Nuclear program, apparently I didn't need it. Is the asvab comparable to the AFOTS that the Air Force administers. I looked at the practice AFOTS and it much harder. Reminds me of the SAT. I found the Asvab easy for the most part except one or two questions in the AR and the WK section. Here are my AFQT, Raw AR, WK, PC, and MK scores. Are these scores a strong indicator of how well I do on the AFOTS and the naval officers exam. AFQT- 98 MK-70 PC-66 WK-63 AR-64 VE-67 Air Force Line Scores. Mechanical-88 Clerical-99 General-95 Electrical-86 Honestly, I think it's bad since I went to college and should have been able to get a perfect raw score and score better than 99% instead of 98%. If I think about it, I'm probably going against some of the best candidates from some of the top engineering programs in the country and my test score has to be competitive with theirs, so if my asvab score isn't better than 99%, would I fair well on the AFOTS or the NCO exam for the Nuclear field. Dang. : ( In response to mrsjvb reply. I am only getting a B.A. in Chemistry, but I'm also graduating with a B.S. in mathematics which I believe is a very technical field. I took some courses in Chemistry that pertained to things applicable to the air force such as Modern Physics, Physical Chemistry, and solid state chemisty, plus I have taken very practical math courses such as ode and pde and some programming such as c++, also engineering dynamics and engineering statics when I was considering Mechanical Engineering 3 years ago. I think I am qualified to say I have gotten a technical degree. I would like to know if my B.S in mathematics and a B.A in chemistry is technical enough. Msjvb brought it into light and I'm wondering if I forget the air force and try and concentrate on the navy now? Seeing as how they are down sizing, should I even bother with the Air Force and just concentrate on getting into the navy?
Future careers for a Quantity Surveyor (QS)? Law, M&E, design? This summer I will complete a post-grad course in Quantity Surveying, a career I've been in for six years now. Unfortunately the construction industry (I work for a main contractor) really isn't for me - far too many arguments, dirty working environments, and an industry set twenty years in the past all frustrate me more than I can express. Wanting a change, I'm tempted to study a course in M&E (mechanical and electrical services for those of you not in construction) or construction law, both of which would move me into more of a consultative role and away from the 50+ hours spent on site I currently put up with (plus 15+ hours in the car each week). What do people think of these career paths - are there jobs out there in law and building services? Long term job potential, salary expectations, benefits are also obviously important. I'm not really after a specific answer (hell, I barely have a question) so your thoughts would be gratefully received.
what could this knee pain be? Hello Back in the second week of January , I slipped at work and my right knee hit the ice.It was never swollen,or bruised, just scraped. It didn't require ice...there was nothing out of place or no weird noise made like a pop,so I just left it be.I made a few Dr's appointments but had to cancel them due to mechanical troubles at work (now before you criticize on that part,I am the only employee working as a contractor running a trial to prove our product,so working was a MUST).I will eventually get it looked at ,but what could the pain be? If there's no swelling would i just be sent for xrays? After I kneel down and get up it hurts,if i wear heavy boots it hurts,if I twist it ,it hurts.Like a stiff sharp kind of pain. Thanks for your help..
How likely will I get denied a security clearance (secret)? I work for a defense contractor. I must get a DoD secret clearance so I can work on classified satellite programs. The only criminal offense I've ever had was a minor in posession of alcohol back when I was in college. I completed a class and it got reduced from a misdemeanor to an infraction. I've had a traffic ticket and got away with two DUIs (never got arrested). Do you think the investigators will find my name in the system even though I was never arrested nor charged? I've done lots of drugs and all my friends are pot/cokehead junkies/alcoholics/losers. The only good references I have are my professors, coworkers and family friends who don't know about any of my misfortunes. On top of all this, I graduated with honors and got a bachelors in mechanical engineering. I was a straight A student and have always succeeded academically and professionally. I am a US citizen and so are my parents and not a national security threat. I am also married too. My wife has been arrested for a DV crime but I am sticking with her and working it out. Will the investigators look into this? I also don't drink or do any drugs anymore.
Is there any hope for me in returning to my field? For nearly 4 years I was an administrative assistant for an HVAC contractor and was recently laid off because of the declining housing market. During the time I was employed there I was able to stay current with CAD programs because I provided support to their drafting team when they had issues with performing some task in the CAD software or plotting problems. Prior to that I was an architectural drafter for 5 years. I'm educated in all drafting fields...architectural, mechanical, civil, electronic, and piping. I'm looking to return to the field of drafting preferably architectural, civil, or mechanical. All the above info is on my resume'. I've applied to several architectural and engineering firms for their listed drafting positions but never get any reply. I didn't call because every posting said "Do not call". I want to return to my field because I enjoy drawing...art/sketching or technical. Going back to school is not an option because of my ongoing financial situation. Is there any hope for me to get back into drafting? Or should I just look for secretarial/clerical work only?
what messeage do we get from this story///? • Every child is a potential achiever and is different from other children in her/his style of learning and area of interest. • Read the interview that follows. It is based on a conversation between Ms Bela Raja, editor of Sparsh, a newsletter from the Resource Centre, The Valley School, Bangalore, and Mr Hafeez Contractor, one of India’s leading architects.• Hafeez Contractor was an unhappy school boy. • He loved doing things but detested mechanical learning. Mathematics gave him the shivers. • What his Principal once said to him influenced him deeply. HC: “I used to have this terrible nightmare. Only now, over the last four to five years, it seems to have disappeared. BR: What nightmare are you talking about and why do you think it has disappeared now? HC: I used to get continuous nightmares about appearing for a maths examination where I did not know anything! Now the psyche must have gotten over it, I don’t have to think about education and there is absolutely no time to get nightmares.BR: Tell us something about your earliest memories in school. HC: In the first and second year I was a good student. After I reached the third standard, I simply lost interest and I never studied. I used to be interested in games, running around, playing jokes and pranks on others. I would copy in class during exam times. I would try to get hold of the examination paper that had been prepared and study it, as I could not remember things that had been taught to me in class. However, later, one sentence spoken to me by my Principal changed my life. When I approached my eleventh standard, the Principal called me and said, “Look here, Son, I have been seeing you from day one. You are a good student, but you never studied. I have taken care of you till today. Now, I can no longer take care of you so you do it yourself.” He talked to me for five minutes, “You don’t have your father, your mother has worked so hard to bring you up and paid all your fees all these years but you have only played games. Now you should rise to the occasion and study.” I used to be a very good sportsman. I had been the senior champion for so many years and I also was the cricket captain. I used to play every game, but that year I did not step out onto the field. I would go for prayers and all I would do was eat and study. I normally used to copy and pass, but I realised that once I was in SSC, I could not do that. When I got a second class, 50 per cent, in my SSC my Principal said, “Son, consider yourself as having got a distinction!” This is my memory of my school days. I did lots of other things. See, as far as my things are concerned, I can’t remember. I forget things very easily. To remember, I have to see things as a photograph. I read abook and I can remember the matter as a photograph but not through my mind. That is how it works. BR: When you were in school and you were doing badly, did the teachers pull you up and how did you feel? HC: I never felt anything on being pulled up. I used to be so interested in playing. I would receive a caning every week. BR: When you knew that you had incurred the wrath of your teacher by not doing your homework or by behaving badly, when you knew you would get a caning, what was the state of your mind? HC: State of mind? Just lift up the hand and they would cane you. It would hurt badly and then I would have to forget about it, because I would want to go and play. BR: You never felt insecure or threatened?HC: I was just interested in playing and nothing else. I was most interested in funny pranks. One day, I did not want to study, so I created a distraction. For one whole hour we played ‘chor police’. Every Saturday we were allowed to go into town to see a movie. So what I would do was have no lunch and collect money from 40 – 50 students, and run and buy the tickets. On my way back, I would eat to my heart’s content. I used to be the leader of a gang. We would have gang fights and plan strategies. These things used to interest me more than any academics.Students used to book my textbooks for the following year, because they were almost brand new. I probably opened them one day before exams.• He stumbled on architecture because he knew little French and less German. • He was offbeat even in the pranks that he played on others. • When he found his calling, there was no looking back. BR: How did you get into the field of architecture? HC: In the college for architecture, nobody who had got below 80 – 85 per cent was allowed to enter. I had only 50 per cent. I wanted to join the Army. I got my admission letter but my aunt tore it up. Then I decided that I wanted to join the police force. My mother said, “Don’t join the police force, just do your graduation!” So I went to Jaihind College in Bombay. There, I was to either take French or German. Though I had studied French for seven years, I did not know seven words of French. So I took German. Then my German teacher died. The college told me that I could change the college ortake French. Now, who would give me admission in another college? I had got admission to Jaihind by influence. So I thought, ‘Okay, I will take French’ and I started learning French again. I learnt it from my cousin. She was an architect’s wife. I was going to an architect’s office to learn French! BR: Was it then that you decided you wanted to do architecture? HC: Actually, it all happened quite by chance. In the architect’s office, I saw somebody drawing a window detail. A window detail is a very advanced drawing. I told him that his drawing was wrong — that the window he had drawn would not open. He then had a bet with me and later he found that indeed, his drawing was wrong! My cousin’s husband was surprised. He asked me to draw a few specific things, which I immediately did. He asked me to design a house and I designed a house. After that, he told me to drop everything and join architecture. We went to meet the Principal of the college. The Principal warned me, “I will allow you to take part in the entrance exams, but if you do not do well I will not allow you to join.”I got an ‘A+’ in the entrance exam and from that day it was a cakewalk. I had never made a plan, but I knew how something looked like, from the top. I had never known what a section was, but I knew if you cut a plan what it would look like. I stood first class first throughout, after that. I believe that all this understanding came from what I used to play and do during school. I had a friend called Behram Divecha. We used to have competitions between us for designing forts, guns and ammunition. Each of us would design something in an effort to be different. In school, when I was in the second or third standard, one of my teachers, Mrs Gupta, saw my sketches and told me, “See, you are useless in everything else but your sketches are good. When you grow up you become an architect”. I did not know at the time but she was right. Later, after I became an architect, I went back to meet her and tell her. BR: Why do you think you did not like studies? Was it because you felt you could not cope, could not deal with the curriculum? HC: I was very bad at languages. Science and geography I could deal with, maths was very bad. I just was not interested. I was studying for the sake of studying. What they taught me today, I would forget after two days. I would not bother because there was no application of mind there, to begin with.BR: Did you think that what they taught in school was boring or did you feel that once you understood the concept of what was being taught, you lost interest in the rest of the lesson? HC: Living in a boarding school is difficult. We were just living from day to day. Nowadays, there are so many tests. Back then, whenever we had tests we used to just copy. The teacher thought that we had done our work. BR: There is a contention that giftedness and learning disabilities go hand in hand. Do you think this applies to you? HC: Well, take some students from my class. Those who always stood first or second are today doing very ordinary jobs. BR: I have come across this situation in so many different places where people tell me that their class toppers are doing very ordinarily today. HC: In school, I think living our lives there made us street smart. I have learnt more by doing what I did on my own thanwhat academics would have taught me. BR: That is because the personality and skills were there. You were able to find expression in a manner you were comfortable with and you defied every rule so that nobody would stop you from doing what you needed to do. HC: I was more interested in other things. If, for example, while in class, it started raining outside, I would think of the flowing water and how to build a dam to block it. I would be thinking about the flow of water within the dam and how much of water the dam would be able to hold. That was my interest for the day. When students lost a button while playing or fighting, they would come running to me and I would cut a button for them from chalk, using a blade. Discipline in the school was very important and no student could afford to have a button missing. The student would get past dinner with a full neat uniform and after that it did not matter. BR: Coming to the present, how do you decide as to what kind of structure you want to give a client? HC: I look at the client’s face, his clothes, the way he talks and pronounces, the way he eats and I would know what his taste would be like. I can relate to people in a way that would be comfortable. I sketch very spontaneously on a paper on the spot. That paper, I give to my people in the office. BR: You do it instinctively?HC: Call it instinct, call it arithmetic, whatever. Now it comes to me like mathematics. Putting design, construction, psychology and sociology together and making a sketch from all that is ‘mathematics’. Here we almost come to a full circle where Mr Contractor has derived his own interpretation of Mathematics — taking it from a subject he hated to a subject he now loves dealing with! Before you read • Every child is a potential achiever and is different from other children in her/his style of learning and area of interest. • Read the interview that follows. How much will it cost me at tax time to claim work I did as a private contractor? I got a new job that has 4-10hr shifts, so i'm free Friday and half of Saturday. My old boss really wants to keep me because I was saving him a bunch of money by doing his mechanical repairs for him. He was paying me $12.00hr, since he's really cheap, he wants to keep me but he doesn't want to pony up the cash, so he's offered to pay me $12.00hr without any deductions, this way I will be a private contractor and he doesn't have to cover me with workman's comp. My question is this, he's going to claim my work on his taxes, so I have to claim it (right?) how much is that going to cost me at tax time? Will it be the same percentage as if he just took the taxes out now? Because if so, that isn't any better for me... ... ... Thanks in advance!!
Is there any Hilti Anchor (Chemical or Mechenical Expansion) available with HDG complying with ASTM A123? Hi i am a Structural Design Engineer and is asked to give my comments about a quarry about Sunshade. in its drawing it is written "All materials should be Hot Dipped Galvanised in accordance with ASTM A123" and " Anchor used for connection with concrete should be Hilti Chemical or Hilti Mechanical Expansions Type" now our contractor is saying that Hilti is not providing HDG(Hot Dipped Galvanised) standerd Anchors. Can anyone please help me in this regard.
I issued 1099-misc to independent contractor. He disputes amount.? I provided him with weekly statements entire 9 mos we worked together. He left without notice after causing over $5000 mechanical damage to company vehicle -- not from motor vehicle accident, so not covered by insurance. Legally, am I required to provide him with any additional backup of the income or deductions made during our time together? Personally, I think he got off easy since I have not 1099'd him for the cancellation of debt for half of these repairs plus another vehicle he never finished paying for that was signed over to him.
Dear Sir, These are the points to be discussed before doing any change of your building. Since the First? Dear Sir, These are the points to be discussed before doing any change of your building. Since the First Floor ceiling Slab are already concrete few months ago and contractor done the electrical and mechanical works as per the following: 1.A/C copper pipes for ground floor, mezzanine floor are traveling from the beam it has to be change the direction. 2.A/c power conduits from each DB passing through the walls to roof for all floor has to be change, to do so it requires extra wiring ,GI conducting ,additional cable tray etc. 3.DEWA will not allow using multi meter in single Zone, as per the approved drawing we have 4 meter in four offices it has to revise and re submit for the DEWA approval and which is time taking. 4.Electrical power layout drawing has to be change and resubmit for DEWA approval. 5.AC thermostat location should change and the location to discuss. 6All power sockets which are coming on the wall has to change and location to be discuss. 7Location for the fire hose real cabinet has to be change and location has to be discuss again and drawing to be revised. 8Architecture drawing has to be change and has to take the approval from DM as per new layout. 9Fistula approved drawing has to be revised. Due to the above following, much additional work has to be done and addition of materials in mechanical and electrical (piping, cable tray, conduits, cables and wires, trucking and floor boxes, supports and accessories), may requires. These may lead to time consuming and cost increasing in the completion of project.
Looking for a U.S. Company in Asia hiring A U.S. Citizen? Have passport and currently working in the Middle East with government contractor on military equipment. Have mechanical background. Interested in same or oil rig job. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You.
Business Name Help? I do AutoCad Drafting for a company I work for and am going to being doing some on the side drafting out of my home. I am looking for a good name for me to use as a business name that can be put on my drawings that I draw up for contractors to get me some recognition. I do all fields of drafting mechanical, civil, architectural, etc. Any ideas for me? It is approved to do other stuff on the side.
Design Houses, where do I go from here? I've designed about 20+ houses since '94 (pure talent....no schooling). I was told by contractors, that I don't need to spend 5 yrs. in college to get Mechanical Engineering training, because it'll be a waste of time. So....some of my drawings are as big as 18"x24", and in order to copyright the floor plans is to shrink them, but that'll be VERY expensive. How do I transfer my plans to some kind of CAD program without redrawing? I've just got so many questions about who to talk to, where to go, and what to do next.......I don't want to be taken advantage of before I get my stuff copyright protected. I didn't even know it was Civil Engineering...they never even TOLD me that! One of the Universities that offer Mechanical said that I'd have to go the 5th yr. to get my Architectural Certification. Now I'm really clueless!

Am I charging too little for handyman and rehab work? A local entrepreneur says he has 80 + hours of work for me doing handyman work, property maintenance, repairs, labor, moving furniture, etc around some of his properties. He wants to pay me $15 an hour. Due to a fluke in a conversation we had before we started, he thinks I have agreed to $15 an hour. When I freelance, I usually charge minimum $85 to show up which covers about 3 hours, and $25 an hour for every hour after that. He wants to hold me to $15 because I didn't speak up before the work started. I feel like I shot myself in the foot here. But if I press the point, I am worried I am going to lose 80 hours of guaranteed work this month. I think $15 is too cheap, and I am devaluing my work and the work of other contractors. Issues to consider in pricing myself. 15 years experience knowledgeable in multiple trades, incl drywall, carpentry, cabinetry, mechanical repairs, light electrical, light plumbing, etc, etc. Own all my own tools I rent space in a workshop so I have a place to do complicated repairs, and build furniture & cabinets use my own vehicle to get to jobs I have to pay my own health insurance and use my cell phone for work I live in Chicago, one of the most expensive cities in the country. I know I'm lucky to even get work these days, but that doesn't mean I have to work at slave wages, does it? Walmart employees don't even need a GED and they make $10 to start. I think $15 is too little. Even my illegal buddies demand $200 a day. For an 8 hour day that's $25 an hour. Thoughts guys?
liens on current bank account can it happen? we are in litigation with our contractor over our home. of course it is being drawn out for almost 3 years. the contractor is suing us due to he is an LLC and had no insurance, which we understood through the bank all was in order. We currently have a mechanical lien on our property by the contractor eventhough The state of alabama licensure board investigated and found the contractor incompetent and he was fined. Possible flooring structure damage? I'm looking at a house and it has soft spots in the flooring that appears to be loose from sub flooring in the kitchen. The floor is also not level and there is some evidence of water damage to the floor in the mechanical room ( back of kitchen/utility room), and may have resulted in possible structural damage to the floor joist below. I was told it would be around $865 to correct this issue from a contractor but he told me I would need a framing contracor to inspect and make an accurate assessment for any repairs. I was told there is a water leak because the house was winterwized and they don't want to turn the water on because the furnace isn't working. There are some other repairs that need to be done to the home also but are minor and manageable that I could do mostly myself except putting in a new furnace. I checked with the utility company was told the the average bill was only $50 for electric and water so I am not sure if it could be a major /plumbing/water leak issue. Do you think this house is worth going through and does the qoute to repair sub flooring sound reasonable? The home is small and the kitchen is only 9x8. Should I be concerned about structure damage or could one live with it and would insurance company fix it if one day it sinked or collapsed? lol
Are load-bearing walls only in multi-story homes? If it helps, our house has no basement and is on an 18" raised concrete slab.
