i recieved a quote from contractor without telling him it was insurance claim.?

I wanted to get a few estimates and then decide who i wanted to do the work. insurance co. put the contractors name on the check.when he found out about the insurance claim he changed the quote doing alot less work for more money. this doesn't seem right to me could i please have some feedback. thank you.

  1. If you have a quote in writing I do not see how he can change it just because he found out the insurance company is who is paying. I have heard that businesses will quote more when an insurance company is involved. But did he ask you about insurance being involved? You should probably have 2-3 estimates anyway. So then you won't have to deal with the one that won't "play fair".
  2. Doesn't seem right to me, either. Tell him you're not signing the check over to him until ALL the work is done, at the original price he quoted. OR, flat out hire another contractor (not to be paid until all the work is completed!) and ask the adjuster to reissue the check, made payable to you and the mortgagee.
