how do I become an independant contractor?
I want to become a mystery shopper, but the company wants me to be an independant contractor. I have been considered an independant contractor for another job years ago, but I am just wondering if it is the same thing now. IUs there a certification you need? Or do you have to have some kind of paperwork?

- an IC of what ? depends ?
- You don't "become" and independent contract. It's just a worker status and means you won't be an employee and when you get paid no taxes are withheld. All you provide them is a W-9 with your social security number. You will file a tax return with a Schedule C and Schedule SE and pay income tax plus self employment tax (social security and medicare taxes which were not paid through payroll deductions). SE tax is 15.3%. Keep close track of your income and expenses.
