  1. a contractor is different from construction worker. tell your son this. A construction worker can become a contractor - owner of the construction business and he should know all the phases of the industries. Measurement is number one important on this. Reading blue print. You have to have a license. A construction worker is just a worker that obeys what the project manager told him to do. You don't need a license but you have to be tough to work when in sultry hot outside and when its freezing cold also. I don't think there is benefit if you are just contractual worker, Hard work. If your son can continue his school - he just better do it while he still young.
  2. get experience working construction first. then when he feels ready, you go get a contractors book through the state. you read the book, then take the test for your license. good luck cause its really really hard.
  3. Try your local carpenter's union or labor union. He can go through an apprenticeship there. Carpentry is hard work, but IMHO, it's a trade that deserves respect. My dad is a carpenter and although his body torn up at 55, he can build amazing things.
  4. I would say that if your son have a good mentor and he can be good at it, then I can share with you that is among the money making business and everybody need home and buy more than one home as matter fact. Construction knowledge alone it won't cut. Once he is the best in his field then let me know I'll share a little more secret or maybe I willing to mentor him to next level. He can learn contruction as side line, high education maybe more socially acceptable though! Fruit for thought
