Home Improvement Contractor - Licensed Contractors

What can I deduct as a part-time independent contractor?

I worked from May to September as an independent contractor. This work was supplemental to my full time job and only required about 10 hours or less a week. I made about $1800 and received a 1099-misc. Can I make any deductions? Such as half the cost of my phone and internet connection (both required for the work) during this period? From what I've read, I can't deduct any workspace expenses because I use my workspace for so many different things. But what about these extra expenses? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

  1. You can deduct expenses incurred to earn the income. You also may be able to deduct workspace if it was used exclusively for your work. This usually doesn't get you much so I wouldn't look too hard here. You can deduct supplies, mileage, postage, phone and other expenses incurred that relate to the work.
  2. You can deduct anything you had to pay out for (stamps,gas,supplies..etc)
