What exactly do civilian contractor's do?

What are the requirements? Diploma, college degree? I know they get paid a lot but what do they do?

  1. it all depends on their area of expertise. "contractor" is kind of a generic term that covers a wide variety of occupations. everything from administrative assistants, computer techs, construction workers, graphic designers---if you can imagine the job then there is a contractor for it. basically the contractor is someone who is employed by a company or a department and they have a contract that specifies the terms of their employment and how they will be paid. They are usually temporary employees and their contracts can be short term or long term. So no, contractors are not always paid a lot of money. a civilian contractor is an individual or a company who works for the government or the military under contract for a specific time period and provides a specific service.
