Home Improvement Contractor - Licensed Contractors

Why are so many companies requiring social security to apply for a job? so before your even hired. is it safe?

We need your Social Security Number in order to pay you as an independent contractor. This is a requirement of the IRS. If in a calendar year, you receive $600 or more from us, we are required to give you and the IRS a 1099 statement of your earnings for income tax purposes.

  1. Yes, it's safe and yes, it's required for the Internal Revenue Service so that they can take out Social Security taxes from your pay. Just make sure that it's the employer who gets it, not someone else. You don't need to give them the actual card--only the number.
  2. yes it is required to record your tax earnings. every where you go and apply for employment you will be asked for this information unless someone is paying you under the table. (cash)
