What's the best way to find a legitimate contractor for home remodeling?

- What state are you in. California has CSLB or California State Lisence Board that has all the information on good contractors. I know Nevada has one too. Go to somewhere like Home Depot and go to the contractors desk, they usually have some contractor cards or information there on contractors that they use. You can even contract Home Depot and they will back up the remodel, they do EVERYTHING
- The first answer is pretty complete. I would start with the local home builders or remodelers association or ask an inspector from the local building department. They will have first hand experience with all of the builders in your area. The state board will only have information on contractors who have violations, not the good ones. Another good way is to drive around and find houses being renovated and ask the owners about their experiences with the contractor. Best of Luck
- Sarah is right about going on line to check the CSLB, but I go even further. I ask to see copies of their bond, insurance and worker's compensation to make certain they have it and it is paid up to date. I also call or go online to check whether they have any complaints with the Better Business Bureau.
