Garage door opener on new home ask builder to install for $700 or hire contractor to do it ?

My builder is asking $700 for a two door garage door opener ($350 each) most probably it is chain based , is it better to go with him or get Home Depot or local contractor to install a good belt based opener, my objective here is to get a better product for less money.

  1. if you can follow directions, have a tape measure and a chalk line you put the thing yourself...
  2. Ask sears, home depot and Loews and see what they are asking for installing. If your builder is installing top of the line garage door opener such as liftmaster, pick the builder because anything goes wrong, you can ask the builder to fix it and you are getting better garage door opener. Recently, I had home depot contractor install garage door opener, they always find a reason to get extra money from you. They will claim that some parts are inferior and I can install this better part for this price. Just say no.
  3. $350 each is a bit much. You can get a good one with installation elsewhere for $250 - $300 each. I hesitate to recommend Home Depot for anything. I would go with Sears or a Garage door company first.
  4. The only reason I had the builder install it is that he became responsible to warrant it. I had a house warranty that was inclusive of everything the builder installed. Since that warranty covered more than the manufacturers did and for a longer period of time, inclusive of the installation, I paid a little more to the builder to have them install it.
  5. Look around and get better quotes. Belt drive openers are only $10 to $20 more per unit.
