Roughly how much will drywall cost for ceiling?

I need to find a drywall contractor to install some drywall on the ceiling. The ceiling size is 28 feet wide and 40 feet across or 1,120 sf with a ceiling height of 9 feet. All ceiling joists are 16" oc Assuming 4x8 sheets of drywall are used, how much do you think this is going to cost materials and labor to have it done?

  1. 800.00...
  2. Materials in our town will cost you about 350.00 that's for 4x12 sheets . better off to have less joints. And I really think the guys can hang that out for the same price. So I'm looking at 700 for the deal. Ceilings are easy for two young hangers. As long as you haven't got 40 boxes to cut in. Lowe's will deliver it for you, You need a few nails and few screws and your under way. Be sure all the backing is in around partitions and at the ends of the building......so they don't have to stop and put in blocks. Also be sure you have any fans or items that need ceiling support also blocked or backed.... Also make sure the floors are clean so these guys can move.......1/2 day they will be gone. Good luck
  3. Wow..... I'm not sure where these other people are from, but I live in California. Over here it runs about $2 - $3 a square foot to hang, tape, texture and prime, so $2k - $3k. That includes materials. I've been in construction for 15 years here and had three construction companies. So I guess it just depends on where you're at?
  4. First of all drywall contractors rarely use 8' sheets. They like to hang as long as sheets as possible. Probably would use 12' long sheets. With ceiling joist on 16" centers they will use 1/2" thickness unless this is a garage ceiling with a living space above which code requires 2 layers of 1/2". Drywall contractors like to hang only when an area is actually ready. This means everything is moved out of the room, all the framing nailers are in place (wood nailers at all intersections where ceiling meets walls). Electrical boxes are help out the proper distance for drywall and if there are devices such as switches, outlets wired in already, the devices need to be pulled out and turned flat and black tape wrapped around the contacts on the sides. In my area you can get drywall furnished and hung for around .55 per square foot. A lot of drywall (hangers) also have a crew to finish the drywall. Remember this is not an entire house - so the square footage price may be a little higher. It won't take them long to do this job. Also all they do is hang it - so don't expect all the scrap to be gone. It will be piled up either outside or in the middle of the room. The best way for you is to have them come and look at the job and give you a written quote. This way you can't get stuck with a sky high price. Do not pay until it is finished.
