How do I measure my windows for ordering window tint film?
I would like to do it myself. Do I measure linear feet or do I measure square footage? I have 20 windows but the panels are no wider than 32 inches or longer than 29 inches. I have several estimates for the same film but wildly different in terms of price. How do the contractors come up with the true amount of film needed? Thank you in advance

- I have seen the window film come in different widths. Home Depot carries window film. As you say that your windows are no wider that 32 inches, purchase a film that is close to that width. No matter what you do you will still have some waste. It is not difficult to apply, you can do it. It is a little messy but still can be done by yourself. When you purchase the window film it has a paper backing that the film is "clung"to. Simply cut the film the LENGTH of your window you are applying it to leaving about 1/2 inch to an inch longer than your window. Trim the width the same leaving a little extra to adjust as you apply. Spray your clean window, apply the film, squeegy out the air bubbles. It's really not that hard, and don't worry, if your make a mistake, you can try over and over until you get it right. Read the directions to apply. The only problem was the cling to itself which could be a little maddening, but if you keep your cool so to speak, it saves you the giant price of a contractor. Did you know that the window film comes in different tints? I used the bronze tint and did several windows, approx. 14 windows. I've also seen patterns in catalogs. I would just like to say ---- that although I was happy with the application of the film, I removed a lot of it from the different windows. It does do exactly as it says it will, however, I found that it was like looking through "light tinted sunglasses" on a constant basis. Also a little gloomy looking in the winter. There is different options such as the tinted roller shades, tinted "curtains" and such if you decide to go that way. PS: To measure, buy the width close to your windows. Add up the total length of all the windows you want to do and then check the length with the length on the roll. You may need more than one roll. I almost forgot, so I had to edit this. The film is also difficult when you would like to wash your windows. You have to take a little more special care as not to scratch it, and you have to be careful of what you use.
- When I had my windows measured by the pros for window tint, they did it by square feet. I haven't had them done yet because of money. I do know you'll save alot if you do them yourself. Good luck!
