What types of questions should I ask a general contractor before I have work doen in my home?

What should I ask and look for when I'm trying to find a reputable general contractor?

  1. The first question I would ask is if they are insured. Ask for proof. Alot of people doing contract work are not. If they screw something up who is going to be the one paying for it?
  2. ask if they are licensed if they have recommendations and get everything in writing
  3. I would check with the Better Business Bureau (BBB),for any complaints. Have the contractor physically show you proof of being licensed and bonded. There are contractors who say they are, but in reality they are not. Get several quotes form various contractors. Visit the contractors business. If they are working out of run down shabby looking building,I would choose another contractor.Appearance is a plus.Shoddy looking means shoddy work. I also would get a list of references, from persons of completed projects.Call or meet with these people and get their likes/dislikes of their contractor. Visit a current job site that is being constructed now, by the contractor you want to hire.Ask that owner the same questions. Get everything in writing Get an itemized quote.Have the contractor(s) break down item for item, the cost /labor for each task needed to be done.Compare these quotes with the others.Materials can be bought cheaper at different suppliers.More than likely you will not have a say as to where the contractor will purchase the materials. Good contractors will have accounts set up at various supply stores.Get a list of the suppliers. You could visit these suppliers and ask of the contractor you are wanting to hire and get their opinion.
