Home Improvement Contractor - Licensed Contractors

How does a general contractor become a union employer in California?

Public Comments

  1. My Dad, here in California just went and joined the Union. He is a Contractor.
  2. DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's easy to get in and will cost you ( and your employees) alot of money to stay in or get out! Look in the phone book under your type of general contracting and "union"
  3. Contact the local Union Hall. They will let you know what they require for Signatory Contractors. Consider using a Full Referral Union if your jobs have a variable workforce. The Hall will send out workers needed for specific contracts and send them somewhere else when the job is done and you don't need them anymore. In the Unions I have experience with, the Union holds the pension, vacation, and health & welfare accounts; contractors just pay into them each pay period. They also are responsible for the training (Apprenticeships). You may wish to consult an attorney so you understand the full scope of the contract.
