- In a nutshell: -Be at least 18 -Document at least 4 years of experience at the journeyman level in the trade for which you are applying -Pass the test - 2 parts, Law & Business and a Trade-Specific Exam -"Pass" an asbestos test (open book pamphlet) -Have at least $2,500 in operating capital -Pass a background check -Post a bond in the amount of $12,500 -Have workers' comp in place, or certify that you have no employees Details and application packet can be found here: http://www.cslb.ca.gov/applicants/default.asp After you submit your application, they will either schedule a test date, ask you for more information, or reject you. You learn whether you pass the test the same day you take it, but the license won't be processed/issued for a few weeks (see "Processing Times" on the above link). After you pass the test, you will receive all kinds of junk mail from bonding & insurance companies (making it easy to shop prices & products). Your life will be much easier if you work with a company that transmits the data electronically to the CSLB, so make sure the company you use has this ability. Don't wait to have the Livescan done - it takes a while to process and transmit clearance to the CSLB. Bonds happen pretty fast.
