Can you cover existing ceilings with new drywall? Have remodeling job inside w/popcorn ceiling?

We have vents in the ceiling along with changes in the lighting fixture placements. The drywall contractor recommended just re covering the whole ceiling with new drywall. Does anyone have any experience in having this done to their ceilings? I should have made it clear about the vents, I just had a new heat pump installed with all the vents installed in the flooring, so the vents in the ceiling are no longer needed. I am talking about 500 sq.ft of popcorn ceiling removal. My husband and I have added an addition of 1000 sq.ft upstairs and downstairs and all of my ceilings downstairs are connected even with the new addition. was afraid with the popcorn removal my ceilings would look bad with all of the vents and the return in the ceilings on the first floor.

  1. Don't block your vents until you know it's safe! They are there for a good reason.
  2. I personally removed all the popcorn off my ceiling. It's a very messy and time consuming job. Then, when it was all done I had to hire a taper to fix the drywall. I suggest replacing the drywall. My sister had large popcorn and scrapped it off. It doesn't come off completely but, it looks good. It just ends up looking like a rough, textured ceiling. I would try that first. If you don't like the look then do the new drywall.
  3. You have 3 options that i can think of. Remove the old drywall and start fresh. Remove the popcorn by spraying water on it and then using a 6 or eight inch scraper to take it off. Or lastly put new drywall over the old using 1/4'' thick drywall. Personally i would try scraping first and if that doesn't work out go with one of the others.
