Can I hang my surround sound speakers without finding a stud?

I just had my basement refinished. We had the contractor put new drywall over existing plaster walls. I had him put holes in the wall for the wires and I want the speakers exactly across from each other. They weigh about 6 lbs. each. Can I just put the screws through the drywall and plaster without locating a stud for hanging?

  1. Use the screws that come with the plastic anchors and you won't have a problem.
  2. I would probably go with a molly or toggle bolt, either of which would handle 6 lbs, no sweat.
  3. If they're not heavy, use expanding bolts in the sheetrock. Available at any hardware store.
  4. Check out the self drilling dry wall anchors like those on this website. They are available at any hardware store, Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart , http://fasteners.hardwarestore.com/19-71-anchors-hollow-wall.aspx Each size should state on the back how much they will hold. I have some holding up a couple of 50 pound mirrors in our bath room.
