  1. First you must learn about paint and it's application. Once you are proficient at applying it then you can bid for work. I assure you that thought it make look easy and interesting, it is a hell of a lot of work and you had better be very good at it or you won't succeed.
  2. You must work as a painter for (I believe five years), take a contractor test, and then get your license. It is fun. It is good to be versatile though. I find work house painting, faux finishing and painting murals in homes. It is very challenging for numerous reasons and a whole lot of hard work. Having something to show at the end of the day is awesome.
  3. Really all you need to do is get jobs. But of course you need to know what you are doing, and be good at it as mentioned by others. Preparatory work is a major part of any paint job, but application of final materials is where the money is made: strive to be a paint jedi if you are going to be working in peoples' homes. It is a must to have contractor's liability insurance for the types of painting you will be doing. This is usually under $100 a month...and protects you from possible accidents etc. Work with another contractor first so that you can learn what to do and what not to do, otherwise you can potentially lose money...
